클레이 룩 애니메이션 제작에 있어서 효율적인 합성 라이팅 효과 활용 사례 연구 (A Case study on Lighting Effects in Compositing of the Clay-Look Animation Production)

초록

An animation is still high value-added industry in the world. However, the animation industry in Korea has been in a deep stagnation. There are some reasons why it happened. First of all, the competence of animation industry in China, India or Southeast Asian countries is growing very fast. It makes Korea's production competitive power weaken. Second, the most of blockbuster animations produced by Korean production was not successful at box office. The investors do not want to take a risk anymore for the animation industry in Korea. Therefore, they are struggling to find out the way out of the difficult situation.
Our production experimented on a new animation pipeline to reduce a production cost when we produced a Doggy Paradise which is a Clay-look TV series animation. We could save lots of labors' cost by using the motion capture system. To simplify an animation pipeline, we just used the default lighting set up when we took a picture Clay background images and set up the 3D digital lighting in Maya. There is a preset function in a compositing application program. We fixed lighting option in advance to depict midday, sunset and night time by controlling color correction.
Through the production pipeline, we could save the production cost about three times. This production pipeline may be one of the solutions to have the competence of animation industry in Korea.
