<광한루기> 작자·평점가의 <춘향전> 서사 인식과 비판 -才子佳人小說 유형과 관련하여- (Recognition and Criticism of the Narrative of Chunhyang-jeon by the Author and Commentator on Gwanghanru-gi - Concerning Novel of Jejagain -)

초록

본 논문에서는 한문소설 <광한루기>의 작품 유형을 밝히는 기초 작업으로서, <광한루기> 작품 작자와 평점가가 <춘향전> 서사를 어떤 소설 유형으로 인식하였는지, <춘향전>에는 그러한 소설 유형 특성이 얼마나 들어 있는지 확인해 보았다. 그간 <광한루기>의 작품 유형을 제대로 논의하지 못했던 이유로, <광한루기>를 <춘향전>과의 관계 속에서만 바라봄으로써 한문소설 작자들의 <춘향전> 서사 인식 문제를 살피는 데 소홀하였다는 점, 그동안 조선 후기 한문 중단편소설의 전반적인 면모가 제대로 드러나지 않았다는 점, 재자가인소설의 개념, 특징, 실체가 명확히 규명되지 못하였다는 점 등을 들 수 있다. 한문소설 작자는 한문소설 유형의 기대 지평에 따라 작품을 바라본다는 점을 고려할 때, <광한루기> 작자와 평점가는 <춘향전>을 재자가인소설에 가까운 작품으로 인식하였을 것이라 판단된다. <춘향전>은 기본 설정과 몇 가지 인물 형상의 차이를 제외하면, 인물 형상과 서사 결구 측면에서 재자가인소설의 특성을 상당히 갖추고 있다. 이도령은 풍류재자로, 춘향은 재색을 겸비한 가인으로 형상화된다. 이도령과 춘향은 인지와 탐색 과정을 거치면서 첫눈에 반하며, 종신언약을 맺고는 노래를 주고받으며 정을 나눈다. 변학도는 小人으로서 두 사람의 결연을 방해하는 데 큰 비중을 차지한다. 이도령은 과거급제를 통해 비로소 춘향을 구원하고 결연에 성공할 수 있었다. 재자가인소설처럼, <춘향전>은 남녀 주인공이 행복한 결연(혼인)을 맺기까지의 과정과 결과에 초점을 맞추고 있으며, 禮敎를 중시하는 면모도 보여준다. 결국 <광한루기> 작자와 평점가의 <춘향전>에 대한 비판은 <춘향전> 서사가 재자가인소설 유형의 기대 지평과 어긋난 데 대한 불만을 드러낸 것이며, <춘향전> 서사를 재자가인소설에 가깝도록 개작한 것이 <광한루기>임을 알 수 있다.

영어초록

This study, as basic research to reveal the type of the Chinese character novel, Gwanghanru-gi (The Story of Chunhyang), investigated what novel type was the Chunhyang-jeon narrative as recognized by the author and commentator of the work Gwanghanru-gi and how much the characteristics of the novel type were included in Chunhyang-jeon. Till now, reasons why the type of the work Gwanghanru-gi has not been discussed properly may include: These studies were negligent to examine the problem of the recognition of the Chunhyang-jeon narrative by the authors of Chinese character novels by looking at the Gwanghanru-gi in its relationship with Chunhyang-jeon only. The overall aspects of medium-length and short stories written in Chinese character were not properly revealed till now during the late Joseon Dynasty. The concept, characteristics, and true nature of a novel of Jejagain (Wit and beauty) were not clearly revealed. Given the authors of Chinese character novels looked at the works according to the horizon of expectation for the Chinese character novel type, it is judged that the author and commentator of Gwanghanru-gi recognized Chunhyang-jeon as a work like a novel of Jejagain. Chunhyang-jeon has considerable characteristics of a novel of Jejagain in terms of the shapes of figures and the conclusion of narrative, except for the difference between the basic settings and some figure shapes. Lee Doryeong (Lee Mongnyong) is represented as a Jeja of Pungnyu (Taste for the arts), and Chunhyang, as a beautiful woman combining intelligence and beauty. Lee Doryeong and Chunhyang have a crush on each other at first through the process of recognition and exploration and share affection, exchanging songs after exchanging vows for lifetime. Byeon Hakdo is a petty character, who plays an important role in disturbing the match of the two. Lee Doryeong was finally able to save Chunhyang and succeeded in a match through passing the state examination. Like the novel of Jejagain, Chunhyang-jeon focuses on the process and result in which the heroine and hero succeeded in a happy match (marriage) and attaches importance to courtesy. Consequently, the criticism of Chunhyang-jeon by the author and commentator on Gwanghanru-gi revealed dissatisfaction with the Chunhyang-jeon narrative that went against the horizon of expectation for the Jejagain novel type, and it is noted that what adapted Chunhyang-jeon narrative to become like a novel of Jejagain was Gwanghanru-gi.
