초록

본고는 경상남도 밀양시 중앙로 324에 所在하는 密陽 嶺南樓를 중심으로 그 일원의 儒·佛·道 융복합적 문화 예술의 양상을 고찰한 내용이다. 嶺南樓는 조선시대 密陽都護府의 客舍에 속한 官營 누각으로 使臣과 賓客을 접대하며, 빼어난 경치를 조망하면서 공적 연회를 하던 건물인 관계로 여말선초부터 목은 이색, 퇴계 이황, 삼연 김창흡 등 역대의 유명 인사들이 많은 제영시문을 남겨 그 인문학적 가치가 크다. 또한 영남루는 일반 누각단청에는 쓰이지 않는 창의적인 조형이 영남루의 품격을 더하고 있으며, 영남루 경내에는 무봉사와 天眞宮, 아랑각 등이 자리하여, 儒·佛·道 융복합적인 문화공간이 되고 있다. 이와 같은 제반 문화들이 밀양시와 영남루 일원의 문화 예술을 특징짓는 요소가 되고 있으며, ‘밀양아리랑대축제’로 탄생되어 문화 예술이 꽃피는 화합의 장이 되고 있다.
밀양 영남루 일원이 지니는 역사적·문화적 의미는 김종직, 사명대사, 아랑 윤동옥의 3대 정신 즉, 사명대사의 忠義ㆍ점필재의 智德ㆍ아랑의 貞純 정신을 모아 천진궁의 단군 제단에 불씨를 봉헌하고(告由) 축제를 열어가는 밀양의 독자적인 문화로서 민족의 수난과 환희, 그 격동의 시대사와 함께 하고 있다. 영남루 일원의 유·불·도 융복합적 형태의 문화와 예술은 유가적 현실과 성향을 기본으로 한 그 독특한 인생 태도, 처세 방식과도 관련이 있다. 대립과 갈등보다는 종교 간의 특성을 수용하면서 각각 그 사상적 특성을 잃지 않은 창의적인 정신으로 역사의 수난과 함께 정신적ㆍ예술적 실천이 되며, ‘밀양아리랑대축제’ 속에서 온전히 전개되어 현묘한 풍류의 장이 되고 있음을 밝혔다. 본 연구는 지방의 향토문화 축제의 문화요소 개선, 콘텐츠 기획 등에 활용이 될 것으로 기대한다.

영어초록

This study examines the aspects of culture and art convergence between Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism of Miryang Yeongnamnu Pavilion and its neighboring area, located in 324, Jungang-ro, Miryang-si, Gyeongsangnam-do. Yeongnamnu Pavilion is government-run pavilion belonging to the local government of the Miryang region during the Joseon Dynasty. It was a building that welcomed envoys and guests or held public banquets while viewing the magnificent scenery. Moreover, from the end of the Goryeo Dynasty to the beginning of the Joseon Dynasty, many famous people such as Mogeun Yi Saek, Toegye Yi Hwang, and Samyeon Kim Chang-heup left behind many poems, so its humanistic value is significant. In addition, Yeongnamnu Pavilion uses creative modeling not used in general pavilion dancheong, which adds to the elegance of Yeongnamnu Pavilion. In the precincts of Yeongnamnu Pavilion, there are Mubongsa, Cheonjingung, and Aranggak, making it a space of convergence between Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. Such various cultures characterize the culture and art of Miryang-si and Yeongnamnu Pavilion, and the ‘Miryang Arirang Festival’ is held based on this, becoming a place of harmony where culture and art flourish.
The historical and cultural significance of the Miryang Yeongnamnu Pavilion and its neighboring area lies in the three spirits, namely, Jeompiljae Kim Jong-jik’s knowledge and virtue, Preceptor Samyeong’s loyalty and righteousness, and Arang Yun Dong-ok’s fidelity and sincerity. These spirits have established themselves as a unique culture of Miryang, which offers festivals by consecrating embers to the altar of Dangun in Cheonjingung. And it is accompanied by the suffering and joy of the nation and its turbulent times. The culture and art of the convergence between Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism in the Yeongnamnu Pavilion and its neighboring area are also related to its unique life attitude and life conduct based on the Confucian realities and tendencies. It has become a spiritual and artistic practice along with the sufferings of history with a creative spirit that has not lost its ideological characteristics while accommodating the religious features rather than confrontation and conflict. Furthermore, it has been fully developed with the ‘Miryang Arirang Festival’ and is becoming a place of exquisite Pungryu. I expect that this study will help improve the cultural elements of local cultural festivals and content planning.
