초록

한국전쟁은 대한민국 공동체의 의식을 이루는 원체험 중 하나이며 우리의현재에 많은 영향을 끼친 기억으로 다양한 콘텐츠로 재현되어 왔다. 그러나 할리우드가 재현한 한국전쟁 항공전은 역사를 탈각시킨 채 한국전쟁을 배경으로 소모한다. 또는 미성년 단계를 벗어나는 한국의 후견인 역할을 하는 미국의모습을 재현하며 한미 관계를 부모-자식 또는 스승-제자와 같은 가족관계로치환시킨다. 우리가 재현한 한국전쟁 항공전 영화는 자주적, 민족적 열망을 충족시키지만, 이는 한국전쟁에 대한 역사적 접근을 억압하여 이루어진다.
이에 비해 장우룡의 만화 <바우트원 대한민국 공군 창설사>는 한국전쟁항공전을 역사 사료, 증언, 사진 등을 종합해 시각화하고 이를 바탕으로 만화로 재현한 작품이다. 이 작품은 기존의 한국전쟁 항공전을 재현한 콘텐츠들과차별화된 특징을 가진다.
첫째, 작가는 역사적 장소, 복장, 기체의 디자인 등을 역사적 고증을 바탕으로 창작함으로써 독자에게 현장감과 몰입감을 제공하고 당시 상황에 실재감을 부여해 이해를 돕는다. 둘째, 작가는 칸 만화뿐만 아니라 각 권의 말미에정교한 고증에 바탕을 둔 항공 일러스트레이션과 자료를 배치해 역사적 재현을 이원화해 제시하고, 이를 통해 칸 만화 서사에서 놓칠 수 있는 디테일을 강화한다. 셋째, 작가는 역사적 증언과 기록을 종합해 논란의 여지가 있는 역사적 사실에 대해 거리를 두고 재현하며, 이를 통해 독자가 다양한 시점에서 역사적 사건에 대해 사고하도록 돕는다.
위 특징들을 바탕으로 작가는 캐릭터의 창작에 있어서 캐릭터의 개인사와현재를 연결해 역사적 맥락을 제시함으로써 다층적인 역사의 흐름 속에 놓인개인을 창조한다. 특히 장우룡이 창조한 캐릭터 곽경필 대위는 일제하에서 항공 독립운동을 펼쳤던 실존 인물을 참고해 만들어진 캐릭터다. 이와 같은 캐릭터는 독자로 하여금 한국전쟁 항공전을 항공 스펙터클의 전시로만 독해하지않도록 하며, 항공기와 비행을 매개로 해 개인 주체의 자각과 집단의 자각을이어오며 역사를 만들어간 우리 항공인들의 정신을 느낄 수 있도록 만든다.
작가는 역사적 실존 인물이 다층적으로 간섭된 캐릭터의 창조를 통해 작중 개인의 역사를 대한민국 공군의 역사이자 우리의 역사로 확대해 재현한다.
이를 통해 작가는 단순한 항공전의 스펙터클 재현을 넘어 당시 현실의 비참에정면으로 맞서 싸운 항공인들의 초상을 복원해 낸다.

영어초록

The Korean War is one of the original experiences that form theconsciousness of the Korean community, and it has been reproducedas a variety of contents as memories that have influenced our presentsignificantly. The air war of the Korean War recreated by Hollywood,however, consumes the Korean War just as the background getting ridof the history. Or, it replaces the Korea-U.S. relationship with familyrelations like parent-child or teacher-disciple while reproducing theaspects of the U.S. that plays roles as a guardian of Korea that is gettingout of the stage of adolescence. The movies in which we reproducethe air war of the Korean War satisfy our independent and nationalaspirations; however, it is done by suppressing historical access to theKorean War.
In contrast, Jang Woo-ryong’s cartoon <History of Founding Bout-1, the Republic of Korea Air Force> is a work that visualizes the airwar of the Korean War by combining historical records, testimony,and photos, etc. and reproduces it as a cartoon grounded on that. Thiswork reveals characteristics differentiated from previous contents thatreproduce the air war of the Korean War.
First, the artist creates historical places, clothes, and aircraft designs based on historical evidence to provide readers with a sense of realismand immersion and to help them understand better by adding a senseof reality to the situation of the time.
Second, the artist deploys aerial illustrations and materials basedon elaborate historical evidence at the end of each volume as well asthe columned cartoon to present historical representations in a dualmanner, thereby reinforcing the details that may be missed in thenarrative of the columned cartoon.
Third, the artist compiles historical testimony and records toreproduce controversial historical facts at a distance, which helps thereaders speculate on historical events from various perspectives.
Based on the characteristics above, the artist creates an individualwithin the flow of multilayered history presenting a historical contextin the creation of a character by connecting the character’s personalhistory with the present. In particular, Captain Kwak Gyeong-pilcreated by Jang Woo-ryong is a character created by referring to a realperson who conducted an aerial independence movement under theJapanese colonial rule. Such characters prevent readers from reading theair war of the Korean War only as an exhibition of aerial spectacles andmake them feel the spirit of our aviation people who have made historyby continuing the awareness of individual subjects and of groupsthrough aircrafts and flight.
The artist expands and reproduces the history of individuals in thework to the history of the Korean Air Force and our history throughthe creation of characters in which real people in history are interferedmultilaterally. Through this, the artist goes beyond simply recreatingthe spectacles of the air war and restores the portraits of the aviationpeople who fought head-on against the misery of the reality at the time.
