신라 명효 『해인삼매론』의 주요 내용과 특징 (Main Contents and Features of Myeonghyo(明皛)’s Hae-in-sammae-ron)

초록

명효의 『해인삼매론』은 신라의 불교교학의 많은 결과물 중 하나로 『화엄경』의 해인삼매의 수행적 측면이 강하게 나타난 저작이다. 이 글에서 가장 특징적인 면은 도인의 존재이다. 『해인삼매론』의 도인은 만자형태의 도장 모양으로 도인위에 게송이 더해져 합시일인이라는 형태를 가진다. 그리고 도인을 인상과 자상으로 설명한다. 『해인삼매론』 은 의상의 『일승법계도』를 참조하여 지어진 것으로 추정된다. 그러나『일승법계도』에는 없는 귀경송과 회향송이 『해인삼매론』에서는 존재한다.
『해인삼매론』은 글의 제목에서 알 수 있듯이 화엄에서 말하는 해인삼매의 실천을 담고 있는 글이다. 명효는 해인삼매의 실천으로 깨달음의성취가 이루어진다고 하였다. 명효는 도인내의 게송의 뜻을 다라니라고 하였다. 이 다라니는 일체의 모든 경전의 중요한 뜻을 모두 가지며, 다라니의 방편으로 중생의 교화와 깨달음의 성취가 이루어진다. 명효는 다라니를 법과 의의 두 가지로 나누어 해석하고 있다. 이 가운데법을 본체[體]와 지혜[智]와 작용[用]의 세 뜻으로 해석하고 있다. 이러한 해석은 『대승기신론』에서 말하는 일심·이문·삼대의 설을 빌어서 다라니의 법을 해석한 것이다. 그리고 다라니의 뜻[義]을 마하연원교의 뜻을 드러낸다고 하여 화엄의 도리가 다라니의 뜻임을 분명히하였다.
『해인삼매론』의 도인의 출발점은 도인의 중앙에서 출발하며, 생사와열반이 그 중심이 된다. 즉 『해인삼매론』의 주된 설법의 대상은 생사를 가지고 있는 중생이 된다. 명효는 중생들에게 이런 것을 강조하여모든 이들이 깨달음으로 향해 나아가고자 하는 서원을 세웠다.
『해인삼매론』에서 나타나는 부처는 구성불(舊成佛)이다. 구성불은 예부터 생사를 버려 몸과 마음이 성불을 이룬 것을 말한다. 구성불은 다라니 본체의 중생의 근본일심과 같은 것으로 중생의 마음과 체성을 넘어 여래의 지혜와 작용이 드러나는 것이다. 명효의 구성불은 연기적수행으로 완성된다.

영어초록

The Hae-in-sammae-ron (海印三昧論, Treatise on the Ocean Seal Samadhi) written by Myeonghyo (明皛) is one of the many results of Buddhism in Silla. It is a work that strongly describes aspect of the practice of the Ocean Seal Samadhi in the Avatamsaka Sutra. The most characteristic aspect of this article is the existence of the Seal Diagram (圖印). The Seal Diagram is a very unique form of Buddhist doctrines and practices, and it is shaped like a fylfot seal. And there are verses on top of this diagram and it’s in the form of the One Diagram with Verses (合詩一印).
As the title of this work suggests, the Hae-in-sammae-ron is about the practice of the Hae-in-sammae, or the Ocean Seal Samadhi spoken by the Avatamsaka Sutra. The Ocean Seal Samadhi is named from the virtues of the ocean. All the laws flow into the sea of the Ocean Seal, and all the sentient beings are reflected in it. According to Myeonghyo’s Hae-in-sammae-ron, the meaning of verses in the Diagram is the Dharani. Myeonghyo interprets Dharani as two: the law (法) and the meaning (義). And he does the law in three: substance (體), wisdom (智), and function (用). This is an interpretation of the Dharani by using the Three Great Fundamentals (三大) of Substance (體), Phenomena, and Function explained in the Dashengqixin-lun (大乘起信論, Awakening of Faith in the Mahayana). In explaining Dharani's meaning, he makes it clear that the principle of the Avatamsaka Sutra is the Dharani’s meaning, as it firmly expresses the perfect teaching of Mahayana.
One of the other characteristics of the Hae-in-sammae-ron is seen in explanations on the shapes of the diagram and the letters. The starting point of the Seal Diagram is the center of the diagram. It starts, he says, with the letters of the ‘life-and-death (生死)’ and the ‘Nirvana (涅槃),’ and the former and the latter are not different. It ends, he says, with same letters, but sentient beings don’t know these. In other words, the main target of the Hae-in-sammae-ron is people with the life-and-death. He emphasized this to the people, setting up his vow for everyone to move toward the enlightenment. The Buddha explained in the Hae-in-sammae-ron is Guseong-bul (舊成佛). It refers to one’s becoming Buddha with one's body and mind by giving up life and death from the past. It is people’s fundamental One Mind, in other words, the Dharani’s substance, which reveals the Buddha’s wisdom and functions Buddha beyond people’s mind and substance. And it is, he says, completed by practice.
