일제말기 김성수의 친일 행적과 변호론 비판 (The criticism about defense theory and pro-Japanese work of Sung-soo, Kim(金性洙) in the end of Japanese)

초록

1937년 7월 중일전쟁 발발 이후 김성수는 종래에 볼 수 없었던, 조선총독부가 관여하거나 조직한 행사나 단체에 적잖이 이름을 올렸다. 또 1943년 하반기부터 징병이나 학병 지원을 독려하는 글과 인터뷰를 여러 편 남겼다.기록이 명백한 이상 그 사실을 부정할 수는 없다. 이에 대해 일찍부터 명의도용이나 조작을 말하는 주장이 있었지만 검토 결과 오히려 그 주장에 문제가 있음을 알게 되었다. 그렇지만 본인이 적극적으로 나섰다고 볼 정황을 찾을 수는 없었다. 해방 후의 표현을 빌면‘사업의유지’를 위해 ‘피동적’ 활동을 한 인물이었다.
김성수가 민족주의 지도자의 이미지를 포기하면서까지 유지하려던 사업은 『동아일보』였다.『동아일보』는 일장기말소사건 이후 10여 개월 동안 저항했지만 ‘폐간불사’를 고집하는 조선총독부에게 결국 백기를 들었다. 중일전쟁 이후『동아일보』를 향한 조선총독부의 압력은 김성수에게로 향했다. 복간은 되었지만 언제 다시 탄압이 올지 모를 상황이었으므로 예전의 자세를 버리고 비로소 김성수는 총독부의 시책에 협력했다. 한 번의 협력은 김성수의 묵인과 방조,또는 체념 속에 두 번 세 번으로 이어졌다. 조선총독부는 김성수를 언제든지 활용할 수 있는 주머니 속의 카드처럼 여겼고, 이내 유명한 친일파 옆에서 김성수의 이름을 찾는 것은 새삼스럽지 않게 되었다.
‘부득이했다는’ 김성수의 학병 강요 행위는 사람마다 평가를 달리 했다. 평소 그의 언행을 접했던 보성전문 출신의 제자들은 그의 강연이나 글에서 본의를 발견할 수 없다고 ‘증언’했다. 그러나 김성수의 행위는 단순히 보성전문학교 안에서만 이루어진 게 아니라 주로『매일신보』나 『경성일보』를 통해 조선을 넘어 일본제국의 판도 안으로 전해졌다. 존경해 마지않던 조선사회의 명사들이 하루가 멀다 하고 학병을 지원하라는 글과 말을 쏟아내는 상황에서 ‘설마 그럴 리가’라고 느낀 독자가 얼마나 될 것인가. 반드시 그 기사 때문에 학병을 지원했다고 볼 수는 없지만 지원자들의 더 이상 저항할 수 없는 좌절감과 실망감만은 충분히 기록을 통해 발견할 수 있다. 조선총독부가 조선사회의 명사들을 무리해서라도 신문 지면에 등장시킨 이유를 여기에서 찾을 수 있다. 비록 피동적이었다 하더라도 그가 쌓아 왔던 명망은 일순간에 사라지고, 일제의 의도를 방조했던 책임에서 자유로울 수는 없다. 그가 지키려 했던 ‘사업’의 평가는 또 다른 문제다.

Seong-Soo Kim registered his name in no small numbers at the events
and the bodies organized or sponsored by the colonial Japanese
government after the Sino-Japanese War in July, 1937. He has never
showed such a deed before. Also he wrote many remarks and gave
interviews which urged young Koreans on to volunteer for a student soldier
from the latter half of 1943. As the records are obvious, nobody can deny
the fact. Regarding this, someone asserted that there had been an illegal
use of his name or fabrications at an early stage, however, according to an
investigation, it proved that such an assertion had some problems. But we
couldn’t detect a circumstance that he had actively served pro-Japanese
activity. According to an expression after Korea’s liberation, he was a man
who served passively pro-Japanese activity for his own business.
The business he wanted to defend enough to give up his image of a
leading nationalist was the Dong-A Ilbo(the Dong-A Daily News). Though
the Dong-A Ilbo made a resistance for 10 months after the incident of
erasing the Japanese flag, in the end it showed the white flag to the
colonial Japanese government which held firm to its opinion to discontinue
issuing the newspaper. After the Sino-Japanese War the colonial Japanese
government started to press Seong-Soo Kim. The Dong-A Ilbo was reissued,
however, as he was in a difficult situation to be subjected to great pressure
at any time, he abandoned his past position and cooperated with the
colonial Japanese government. His first cooperation with the colonial
government was connected with the second and third one under his
assistance and resignation. As the colonial government regarded him as a
card in its pocket, it was not sudden and unexpected to find the name of
Seong-Soo Kim next to the notorious pro-Japanese men soon.
His activity to urge the young men to volunteer for a student soldier
owing to unavoidable circumstances was interpreted variously by different
persons. His pupils who were from Boseong College and usually got in
contact with him testified that they couldn’t find his real intention in his
lectures and writings. However, his deed was not carried out simply within
the campus of Boseong College, but transmitted to all domains of Japan
over Korea through Maeilshinbo(a newspaper) or Kyeongseongilbo(a newspaper).
Under the circumstances that respected and eminent persons from Korean
society urged the young men on to volunteer for a student soldier almost
everyday by their word and writing, how many readers thought “Really?”.
Though it was not certainly probable for the young men to volunteer for
military service because of such articles, it could be found out sufficiently
in the records that they felt frustrated and disappointed.
That is why the colonial Japanese government made the eminent persons
from Korean society come into a newspaper by force. Though he passively
served pro-Japanese activity, his reputation faded out in a moment and he
can not be free from his responsibility that he assisted Japanese intention.
The appraisal of his business which he wanted to defend is a different
matter.
