초록

동학사상은 한국 근대사상에 있어서 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있고, 그 핵심이념은 시천주 사상이라고 할 수 있다. 또한 동학의 시천주 사상은 동학 21자 주문에 그 사상이 압축되어 전달되고 있다. 그러나 동학사상은 천주에 대한 포괄적이며, 통합 종교적인 요소를 가지고 있다고 하지 않을 수 없으므로 각각의 종교에 나타난 신과 천주에 대한 관념을 구체적으로 살펴본 후 각각의 종교에서 가지고 있는 신과 천주에 대한 한계점을 최수운의 동학에서는 어떻게 주체적으로 종합하고 있는지 평가하여야 시천주 사상의 본래적 의미가 보다 구체적으로 드러나리라 본다.
또한 최수운은 기존의 사상체계가 도덕적 형식화 내지는 외면화한 현실에서 이를 극복하고 인간의 내면화에 성공하기 위한 덕목으로서 「수심정기」를 강조하여 인간 내면에 자각적으로 실천할 수 있는 길을 마련하고 있고, 사상과 이념이 개인적 주체화가 이뤄져 지행합일의 실천적 수행이 가능하도록 하고 있다. 이러한 실천은 다름 아닌 동학주문에서 찾을 수 있기에 동학이 본래의 살아있는 사상으로써의 위치를 확보하는데 결정적 역할을 한다고 할 수 있다.
따라서 먼저 동학의 시천주 사상에 대하여 고찰한 연후에 동학주문 21자의 의미를 보다 유기적으로 고찰함으로써 동학사상의 특징과 동학주문의 독특한 의미를 밝히는데 주력하고자 한다.
제1장에서는 동학사상의 근간을 이루고 있는 시천주 사상의 통합 종교적 요소를 살펴보고 그 실천수행의 방법으로 제시된 동학주문 21자를 살펴봄으로서 본 연구의 목적이 있고 그 연구방법과 목적을 밝히고 있다.
제2장에서는 동학사상의 창도자인 최수운의 사상을 중심으로 시천주 사상의 핵심적 내용을 우주관, 신관, 천주관으로 나누어 논하고 천주관은 보다 구체적으로 유교, 도가, 서학 및 동학의 한울님과의 사상적 비교를 통하여 동학의 독자적 사상을 파악하고 있다.
제3장에서는 정(精) - 기(氣) - 신(神)이 주문과 맺는 관계성 및 주문의 주요한 특징으로서 반복성과 목적성이 가지는 의미 및 인간의 적극적 행위로서의 주문이 가지는 창조성에 대하여 고찰하고 있다.
제4장에서는 신인합일과 주문수행을 통한 인간정신의 상호 관련성 및 시천주 주문의 구체적 의미 및 주문수행과 도성덕립의 문제를 서술하고 있다.
제5장에서는 동학사상과 주문수행을 통해 현대인이 처한 정신적, 육체적, 사회적
문제에 대한 해결책 및 동학의 현재적 가치에 대하여 기술하고 있다.

영어초록

The Donghak Thought is positioned so important in recent-modern thoughts of Korea that its core philosophy could be said to be Sicheonju Thought (meaning serving the Heavenly God in my mind). The Donghak Sicheonju Thought is succinctly mentioned in the 21-letter Donghak mantra. However, given that Donghak Thought involves the comprehensive and integrated religious elements of Heavenly God, the ideologies of various religions' God and Heavenly God should be specifically examined, and it should be evaluated how such religious limitations of God and Heavenly God were viewed and evaluated in Choi Su-un's Donghak in order to further specifically define the original meaning of Sicheonju Thought.
In addition, Choi Su-un emphasizes that, in this reality where the system of existing thoughts is just perfunctorily operated and averted, to overcome such reality, a virtue of keeping mind and set right spirit should be fostered so a way should be prepared inside the human mind to awaken one to the truth, and thoughts and ideologies should be individualistically established, thus making it possible to practice what one knows. Such practice can be found in Donghak’s mantra, thus playing a crucial role in allowing Donghak to secure its position as a vital thought.
Thus, this study examines the Sicheonju Thought of Donghak, and further examines the meaning of the 21 letters of Donghak mantra, so as to identify the characteristics of Donghak Thought and the particular meaning of Donghak mantra.
Chapter 1 examines the integrated religious elements of Sicheonju Thought, which is the foundation of Donghak Thought, and further studies the 21 letters of Donghak mantra, proposed as the thought meditation method, in a bid to define the research methodology and purpose.
Chapter 2 examines the thoughts of Donghak Thought founder Choi Su-un, and discusses the key contents of Sicheonju Thought in terms of the view of the universe, the view of God, and the view of Heavenly God. The view of Heavenly God is specifically compared with Confucianism, Taoism, Western studies, and Hanulnim of Donghak to define Donghak’s unique thoughts.
Chapter 3 examines the relationship of emotion, spirit and God with mantra, the meaning of the repetition and purposefulness as the major characteristics of mantra, and the creativity of mantra as the positive act of humans.
Chapter 4 discusses the mutual relations of human spirits based on the unity of man and god and on the meditation of mantra, the meaning of mantra meditation, meditation of mantra and practice of Hanulnim virtues.
Chapter 5 discusses solutions to modern people’s mental, physical and social problems through the practice of Donghank Thought and mantra, as well as the modern value of Donghak.
