僧肇의 常滅本性과 宗密의 本覺眞心 비교－ 僧肇의 「涅槃無名論」과 宗密의 原人論에 한정하여 － (A Comparison between Sengzhao’s Ever-calm Intrinsic Nature and Zongmi’s Intrinsically Enlightened True Mind: Within Sengzhao's Unnameability of Nirvana and Zongmi's Inquiry into the Origin of Humanity)

초록

중국대승불교는 涅槃에 이르는 단초이자 사람의 근본성품으로 佛性을 강조했다. 佛性은 中觀과 唯識의 哲學으로 대표되는 인도의 大乘佛敎에서는 상대적으로 덜 주목받았었다. 이 논문은 中國佛敎에서의 涅槃과 佛性에 주목하여 僧肇의 「涅槃無名論」에서 말하는 常滅本性과 宗密의 原人論이 내세운 本覺眞心이 相通함을 밝힌다.
僧肇는 中國大乘佛敎의 초기에 緣起空과 涅槃을 오해한 格義佛敎의 여러 이론들을 바로잡고, 緣起와 空이 다르지 않음과, 나아가 緣起空과 涅槃이 다르지 않음을 밝혀 모든 중생이 寂滅한 涅槃의 성품인 常滅本性을 가졌음을 보인다. 宗密은 佛敎의 여러 宗派들을 회통하면서 本覺眞心인 佛性이 業習妄想 때문에 如來藏에 가려졌음을 밝히고, 本覺眞心을 온전히 드러냄으로써 부처를 이룰 수 있음을 역설했다. 僧肇와 宗密은 서로 처한 상황이 달라서 각각 강조한 바와 논술의 방법이 달랐다.
그러나 둘 사이의 논술의 차이에도 불구하고, 緣起를 넘어선 涅槃과 如來가 緣起의 무궁한 변화와 다르지 않다는 데에 「涅槃無名論」과 原人論은 견해를 같이한다. 宗密의 原人論의 敎判에 僧肇의 常滅本性을 대입하여 볼 때, 둘의 涅槃과 인간의 本性에 대한 견해가 서로 會通할 수 있다는 점은 분명해진다.

영어초록

Chinese Mahayana Buddhism emphasizes Buddha Nature which is the fundamental nature of mankind and the basis by which to reach nirvana. The Buddha Nature was comparatively less emphasized in Indian Mahayana Buddhism represented by Madhyamaka and Yogacara philosophy. Focusing on nirvana and Buddha Nature, this paper verifies that the ‘ever-calm intrinsic nature(常滅本性)’ in "The Unnameability of Nirvana" of Zhaolun by Sengzhao(374~414) and the ‘intrinsically enlightened true mind(本覺眞心)’ in The Inquiry into the Origin of Humanity by Zongmi(780~840) are largely similar and deeply related to each other.
In the early era of Chinese Mahayana Buddhism, Sengzhao corrected ge-yi Buddhists’(格義佛敎) misunderstandings about interdependent co-arising(pratitya-samutpada), emptiness (sunyata), and nirvana; clarified the non-duality between the interdependent co-arising and emptiness as well as the non-duality between the interdependent co-arising and nirvana; and conclusively showed that all sentient-beings have an ever-calm intrinsic nature, which is the characteristic of nirvana. Meanwhile, Zongmi classified and related diverse Buddhist schools within his panjiao(判敎); clarified that the tathagata-garbha hides the intrinsically enlightened true mind, that is the Buddha Nature, behind karmas and delusion; and finally suggested that Buddhahood can be attained through revealing the intrinsically enlightened true mind correctly and completely. As their circumstances were different, Sengzhao and Zongmi emphasized different points and discussed them differently.
Nonetheless, in spite of the differences in their discussions, both "The Unnameability of Nirvana" and The Inquiry into the Origin of Humanity agree that nirvana and thatagata overcoming interdependent co-arising do not differ from all never-ending phenomenal changes that occur throughout interdependent co-arising. If Sengzhao’s philosophy of non-duality is applied to the panjiao in Zongmi’s Inquiry into the Origin of Humanity, it becomes very clear that Sengzhao’s perspective on nirvana and on the human nature are similar and can be closely compared to that of Zongmi.
