초록

이 논문은 신라에서 성립한 『금강삼매경』에 대한 최초의 주석인 원효의『금강삼매경론』의 주요 내용과 특징을 살펴본 글이다. 『금강삼매경』은신라계와 가야계의 연합, 즉 신라 왕실의 정계와 그 방계로 편입된 가야계의 연합에 의해 성립된 경전으로 추정된다. 가야계 ‘왕비의 병’이 상징하는 정치적 문제 즉 가야계의 골품제 편입 문제 등 신라계 만으로는해결할 수 없는 정치적 난제를 신라의 통치자는 불교계와 바다를 무대로 동아시아의 해상무역을 주도했던 가야계와의 연합을 통해 해결하려했던 것으로 이해된다.
신라 왕실은 이 문제를 해결하기 위해 검해(혜공)→대안→원효 등에게의뢰한 것으로 추정된다. 『금강삼매경』과 『금강삼매경론』은 반야 중관(空性)과 유가 유식(假有)의 일미적 통섭이라는 커다란 기획과 일미관행(一味觀行)과 십중법문(十重法門)의 구도 아래 일심과 본각, 시각과본각이 둘이 아닌 일각이 되는 과정을 잘 보여주고 있다. 원효는 대승선관을 담고 있는 이 경전이 중관의 이제설과 유식의 삼성설이 어떻게접목되는지 잘 보여주는 경전으로 파악하였다.
이 경전의 이름이 담고 있는 것처럼 ‘금강’의 성질을 비유로 삼아 모든‘의혹’을 깨뜨리고, 모든 ‘선정’을 꿰뚫고자 하는 ‘삼매’로 중생이 부처되는 일미관행의 길을 열어두고 있는 지점에서도 확인할 수 있다. 일심지원의 본각 부처가 중생과 만나기 위해서는 일심의 공간이 필요하다.
일심은 부처와 중생이 일미적으로 만나는 우주적 공간이며, 은밀문(여래장)과 현료문(아리야식)이 만날 수 있는 심의식의 공간이다. 일심은중관과 유식이 일미적으로 화회할 수 있는 마음의 공간이며, 적멸로서의 일심과 여래장으로서 일심, 화엄 진심으로서 일심, 본법으로서 일심이 만날 수 있는 지평이기 때문이다.
원효는 일심지원과 일심, 일심본각과 일각의 관계를 통해 부처와 중생이 만날 수 있는 통로를 열어두었으며 중생이 부처가 될 수 있는 길을열어두었다. 이것은 그가 이 경전의 편찬 취지와 의도가 가장 잘 파악한 것이라 할 수 있다. 원효의 주석을 인도에서 중국으로 건너온 번경삼장이 ‘소’(疏)가 아니라 ‘론’(論)이라 한 것도 바로 ‘경론’의 취지와 방향을 온전히 평가한 것이라고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

This paper examines the main idea and features of Treatise on Vajrasamādhi-sutra (TVS) of Wonhyo, which is the first treatise of Vajrasamādhi-sutra (VS) that was canonized in Silla. VS is considered a Buddhist scripture that was canonized as a result of the unification of both Silla, the main power, and Gaya, the subsidiary power. It is noted that complicated political issues have followed the unification of the two nations; we observe clues in the records, such as “the sickness of the Queen of Gaya.” These political issues have included the reorganization of the ruling system that allowed the political power of Gaya to be placed into the Golpoom system, the political system of Silla.
To solve this political issue, the royal family of Silla relied spiritually on prominent Buddhist monks descended from the lineage of Gumhye (also called Hyegong), Daean, and Wonhyo. VS and TVS demonstrate well how One Mind and Original Enlightenment, Original Enlightenment and Actualized Enlightenment, become the same One Enlightenment under the system of both the One Taste contemplation practice and Ten Dharma Gates; this is accomplished in the pursuit of harmonization of the Madhyamaka school and the Yogâcāra school. Wonhyo understood that VS is a sutra that demonstrates well how the Two Fold Truth of the Madhyamaka school and the Three Natures Theory of the Yogâcāra school harmonize with each other.
The harmonization process is also exhibited in the name of the sutra itself. It is because the Vajra, or diamond, illustrates the strongest character that can demolish any kind of defilement; it bores a hole on any hard barrier of Samadhi so that a sentient being can become an enlightened person. However, for a sentient being to become enlightened, one needs to have some space to make this happen. That space is One Mind; through this universal space of mind, a sentient being can meet with an enlightened being, and esoteric teaching (tathāgatagarbha) can meet with explicit teaching (ālaya vijnāna). It is because One Mind is a space of mind that the Madhyamaka school and the Yogâcāra school can harmonize as one; likewise, different concepts of One Mind, such as One Mind as Nirvana, One Mind as tathāgatagarbha, One Mind as the True mind of Huayan, and One Mind as Original Dharma, can harmonize as one.
Wonhyo opened a pathway through which a sentient being can meet with enlightened beings by clarifying the relationship between One Mind and the Origin of One Mind, as well as the relationship between Original Enlightenment and One Enlightenment. This demonstrates how well Wonhyo comprehended the true purpose and intention of canonizing VS.
The reason the Indian translators who came to China later named Wonhyo’s work the “treatise” on VS instead of “commentaries” on VS was because of Wonhyo’s excellent comprehension of VS.
