대한제국기 잡지와 애국론의 혼종성 (The Hybrid Nature of Magazines Discussing Discourses on Patriotism during the Era of the Korean Empire)

초록

근대 한국의 애국주의나 내셔널리즘에 관한 선행연구들은 대개 3가지 경향성을 보인다. 첫째, ‘애국’의 존재를 기정사실화한 상태에서 선험적으로 수행되었을 뿐, 애국 담론 자체의 형성과정이나 그 복수성에 주의를 기울인 경우는 희소하다. 둘째, 연구 대상이 된 주요 문헌 자료 중 신문 매체는 적극적으로 다룬 편이지만, 다양성과 내용의 완결성 면에서 우위에 있던 잡지 매체들은 총체적인 분석의 대상이 되지 못했다. 셋째, 번역 텍스트와 수용자의 주체적 개입 양상에 상대적으로 덜 주목해왔다. 이상의 문제의식을 토대로 이 글에서는 대한제국기 잡지의 애국 담론의 과도기적 성격을 드러내는 것을 목표로 삼았다.
애국 담론은 곧 매체의 정치적 지향과 직결되어 있기도 했지만, 『조양보』나 『태극학보』의 사례에서 확인할 수 있듯 상충된 애국론이 하나의 매체 안에서도 공존하기도 했다. 특히 『조양보』의 「논애국심」이 보여준 ‘반애국론’은 당시의 애국운동을 감안할 때 매우 이채로운 사례이다. 다만 이 같은 흐름 역시 명백히 그 시대의 공론장이 배태한 문제의식인 만큼, 동시기 미디어 전체로 범위를 확대한다면 유사한 계보의 목소리들을 더욱 다양하게 발굴할 수 있을 것이다.
충군이 곧 애국을 의미하던 시대로부터의 이탈은 번역이 앞당겼다. 량치차오의 애국론이 여러 형태로 번역되고 변주된 것이 그 대표적 사례다. 하지만 『서우』와 『소년한반도』의 량치차오 활용법이 다른 것처럼 동종 텍스트로부터 번역된 애국 역시 하나의 정치적 입장만을 을 대변하는 것은 아니었다.
최신 학문을 배운다는 자각을 지닌 유학생들의 기관지 『태극학보』에 ‘충군’의 미덕이 꾸준히 언급된다는 사실도 특기할 만하다. 그러나 그 안에서도 ‘충군’의 자리는 불안정하게 유동하고 있었다. 이러한 지점들은 대한제국기 담론장 자체의 과도기적 성격과 그 속에서 개진되던 애국론의 혼종성을 여실히 증명해준다.

영어초록

Previous studies on patriotism and nationalism in modern Korea mostly manifest the following three tendencies. First, these studies adopted a transcendental approach, presupposing the existence of patriotism without focusing on the formation processes of discourses on patriotism or the plurality of these discussions. Second, they actively investigated newspapers as a main source of literature data for research but did not intensively analyze magazines that surpassed the other media types in terms of diversity and completeness of contents. Third, they paid less attention to aspects of translated text and the independent intervention of translation receivers. To overcome the limitations of previous research, this study sheds light on the transitional characteristics of discourses on patriotism presented in magazines published during the era of the Korean Empire.
Discourses on patriotism are generally linked to the political orientation of media channels introducing them. However, there are also cases where conflicting theories of patriotism coexist within a single media channel, as shown in the magazine Joyangbo (朝陽報) and the journal Taegeukhakbo (太極學報). Particularly, the article “Discussing the Patriotic Mind” (論愛國心) presented in Joyangbo aligns with the theory of anti-patriotism, thus evaluated as an unusual example of discourses on patriotism given the prevalence of patriotic movements during the era of the Korean Empire. However, as this discussion in Joyangbo clearly reflects the prevailing concerns of the era, extended research based on the entire range of media during the same period may lead to the discovery of similar opinions.
Furthermore, translation accelerated a departure from an era where showing loyalty to the sovereign was deemed as patriotism. This phenomenon is represented by instances of Liang Qichao’s theory of patriotism translated and adjusted in various forms. However, the idea of patriotism indicated in the same translated text does not reflect only a single political viewpoint, as shown in the journal Seowoo (西友) and the magazine Sonyeon-hanbando (少年韓半嶋) where Liang Qichao’s theory of patriotism was applied for different purposes.
It is worth noting that the virtue of showing loyalty to the sovereign is consistently mentioned in Taegeukhakbo, an institutional journal published by Korean students engaged in the latest academic studies overseas. Nonetheless, the significance of showing loyalty to the sovereign varies in the discourses presented in Taegeukhakbo. These observations clearly demonstrate the hybrid nature of the transitional characteristics of channels of discourse focussed on the theory of patriotism that were developed during the era of the Korean Empire.
