기독교교육을 위한 어린이영성론 연구: 데이빗 해이와 레베카 나이의 어린이영성론에 대한 비평적 대화 (A Study on Children's Spirituality for Christian Education: A Critical Conversation on Children’s Spirituality of David Hay and Rebecca Nye)

초록

본 연구는 어린이영성 연구의 초종교적 경향성을 비평적으로 고찰하고기독교원리에 입각한 어린이영성교육의 방향을 제시하고자 하는 데 연구의 목적을 두고 있다. 이를 위해 해이와 나이의 어린이영성론을 고찰하되,기독교교육은 일반영성교육과 달리 기독교영성에 기초한 교육이어야 함에따라 이들의 어린이영성론을 기독교영성론의 관점으로 비평적으로 대화한후, 이에 따른 기독교 어린이영성교육의 방향을 제안하고 있다.
해이와 나이의 어린이영성론은 관계성을 중요시하였지만 하나님↔인간의 인격적이고 쌍방적인 관계성을 표방하는 기독교영성과는 달리, 어린이→하나님(혹은 타인, 자연세계, 자아)이라는 일방적 관계성에 주목하고 있다. 또한 이들의 어린이영성론은 영성이 어린이의 자연본성적 능력이라는현상적 사실을 규명하였지만 영성의 원천이 하나님의 영이라는 사실을 분명히 제시해주지 못하고 있다. 또한 해이와 나이의 영성론은 초종교적이고보편적인 논점에 집중되어 있었기 때문에 기독교적 어린이영성교육 원리를 정립하는 데 한계를 지니고 있다.
그럼에도 불구하고 해이와 나이는 어린이영성의 존재성을 학문적으로입증하고 인지-언어적 능력에 관계없이 출생 후 모든 어린이는 영성적 능력이 있으며, 때문에 영아기를 포함한 모든 어린이의 영성형성의 가능성과 영성교육의 필연성을 인식시켜 주었다. 또한 이들은 어린이영성의 핵심인‘관계적 의식’을 통해 어린이영성이 무엇인지, 어떤 특성을 지니는지 명료하게 규명해줌으로써 기독교적 어린이영성교육을 실행하기 위한 중요한자원을 제공해주었다.
본 연구는 이와 같은 비평적 대화를 기초로 기독교 어린이교육의 방향을 제안하고 있다. 먼저 기독교 어린이영성교육의 대전제는, 어린이의 생득적 영성을 교육적 통로로 삼지만 그것을 넘어서서 예수그리스도를 통해 계시된 삼위일체 하나님을 궁극적 지향점으로 삼는 것에 있다. 둘째, 어린이영성교육의 목적은 어린이의 생득적 영성형성과 더불어 기독교적 영성형성을 돕는 것으로서 출생 후부터의 모든 어린이가 그 대상이 된다. 셋째,기독교 어린이영성교육의 실천방향은 경이감과 경외감의 경험, 하나님 경험, 전인적 안식과 삶의 변형이 이루어지도록 하는 데 있다. 즉 기독교 어린이영성교육은 어린이가 하나님, 타자, 자연세계, 자아와의 관계성 속에서 가치감, 신비감, 자각감과 같은 진기한 의식경험을 하도록 지원하고 촉진해야 한다(경이감과 경외감의 경험). 기독교 어린이영성교육은 생득적인 영적 능력을 통해 경험되는 궁극적 실재가 곧 삼위일체 하나님임을 발견토록하고 그를 만나고 예배하고 대화하며 관계맺도록 이끄는 교육을 실행해야한다(하나님경험). 기독교 어린이영성교육은 어린이가 하나님과 만나고 대화하고 진리를 깨닫게 됨으로써 전존재적 평안을 누리며 자신과 세계를 향해 변형적 삶을 살아가도록 해야 한다(전인적 안식과 삶의 변형).

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to establish a children’s spirituality that is based on Christian doctrine as the primary task of implementing a Christian spiritual education for children. First, it examines the children’s spirituality of Hay and Nye who have investigated the characteristics of children’s spirituality academically. Next, it researches the characteristics of Christian spirituality since unlike other spiritual education, Christian spiritual education for children needs to be based on the uniqueness of Christian spirituality.
Third, after evaluating and critically engaging children’s spirituality of Hay and Nye from Christian spirituality perspective, it moves on to suggest direction for Christian spiritual education for children.
Although the spirituality of Hay and Nye emphasizes relation, it focuses on one way relationship from child to God (and to others, nature, and self) unlike Christian spirituality that advocates for personal and mutual interpersonal relationship between God and human. In addition, although they state that children’s spirituality is innate ability as a phenomenal fact, they do not clearly indicate that the source of their spirituality is the Spirit of God. The spirituality of Hay and Nye is limited in establishing Christian children’s spirituality in that they focus on general and cross-faith points of discussion.
Nonetheless, Hay and Nye have demonstrated children’s spirituality academically and that all children after birth regardless of their cognitive-linguistic ability possess spiritual capacity. Hence, they have indicated the possibility of spiritual formation of all children including infants and the necessity of spiritual education. Additionally, by explaining ‘relational consciousness,’ which lies at the core of children’s spirituality, they clearly define children’s spirituality and describe its characteristics, providing an important resource for implementing Christian spiritual education for children.
Based on the critical examination, this study suggests direction for the future children’s education. First, the great premise of Christian spiritual education is that although we understand children’s natural spirituality to be an educational channel, we do not stop there, and that our ultimate aim is the triune God revealed through Jesus Christ. Second, the purpose of spiritual education for children is nurturing Christian spiritual formation as well as the formation of their natural spirituality, and it includes all children after birth as subject.
Third, the aim of Christian spiritual education for children is to foster experience of wonder and awe, God, and holistic sabbath and transformation of life. In other words, Christian spiritual education for children needs to support and stimulate children to experience value-sensing, mystery-sensing, and awareness-sensing in relationship with God, others, nature,and self (experience of wonder and awe). It needs to help children discover that the ultimate being experienced through their natural spirituality is none other than the triune God and to implement education that leads them to encounter, worship,dialogue with, and have relationship with that God (experience of God). Christian spiritual education needs to help children understand truths by meeting and dialoging with God and in doing so, experience holistic peace and to live a transformed life towards the self and the world(sabbath of the whole-being and transformation of life).
