초록

이 글의 목적은 김지하 문예이론의 완성체인 ‘흰 그늘’의 미학이 지닌 미학적 요체를 숭고로 파악하여 그 특성을 고찰하고자 함에 있다. 김지하 문예 이론의 결정체인 ‘흰 그늘’의 미학은 수십 년에 걸친 그의 문학적 여정에 따라 성립된 각각의시학이 전이, 확장, 습합되면서 완성된 것으로 볼 수 있는데, 이를 크게 구분하여보자면, 민중시학, 생명시학, 율려시학의 셋으로 나눠 볼 수 있을 것이다. 그러나이들 각각의 시학은 각자 분리된 영역으로 존재한다기보다는 서로 간의 전이와 습합 과정을 통해 하나의 일관된 맥락을 형성하고 있다. 따라서 ‘흰 그늘’의 미학은민중시학, 생명시학, 율려시학을 아우르는 김지하 문예이론의 사상적, 미학적 종합이자 완성판이라고 할 수 있는데, 각각의 시학은 서로 다른 미학적 자질을 지니면서도 서로 상통하는 미적 원리의 교호작용을 통해 ‘흰 그늘’의 미학이라는 김지하의 독자적인 문예이론으로 수렴된다.
‘흰 그늘’의 미학적 요체인 지기일원론(至氣一元論)을 통해 살펴볼 수 있는 김지하 문예이론의 숭고 특성은 단순히 미와 대립되는 차원에서 논의되는 것이 아니라 추를 매개로 하여 미와 추를 동시에 아우르는 고양 차원에서 시 형식과 양식을바라보고 있다는 점, 또한 육체와 정신의 이분법이 아니라 육체와 정신, 칸트식의감각과 이성이 달리 존재하는 것이 아니라 감각이되, 에너지이되 이성, 정신까지회통하는 차원에서 언급되고 있다는 점에서 서구의 여러 숭고 논의와 겹치면서도미학적 독창성을 지니고 있는 것으로 판단된다. 또한 기존의 숭고 논의에 있어 보편적 대상이 되고 있는 고통이나 쾌의 문제, 모순과 갈등의 문제도 대립되는 명제들이 전환이나 변증법적 지양으로 합일되기보다는 상보성으로서, 서로 간의 공존차원으로 바라보고 있는 점, 나아가 이것 역시 고정된 형태로 존재하는 것이 아니라 끊임없이 변화하고 생성한다고 보고 있는 점이 지기일원론(至氣一元論)의 미학에 나타난 숭고의 요체이자 특성이라고 할 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

This study aims to identify the aesthetic essence of ‘white-shadow’, which is the culmination of Kim Ji-ha’s literary theory, as the sublimity, and to examine its characteristics. The aesthetics of ‘white shadow’, the fruit of Kim Ji-ha’s literary theories, can be considered to have been completed over a few decades of his literary journey by transition, expansion and assembly of each of his poetics established during that journey, and it can be largely divided into three domains such as the poetics of the masses, the poetics of life, and the yulryeo-poetics. However, each of these poetics forms a single and consistent context through a process of transfer and assembly with one another, rather than staying in each separate area. Therefore, the aesthetics of the ‘white-shadow’ may be considered as the ideological and aesthetical culmination and synthesis of Kim Ji-ha’s literary theories that encompass all areas of the poetics of the masses, the poetics of life, and the yulryeo-poetics, and while each poetic theory maintains aesthetic qualities different from the others, they are converged into unique literary theory of Kim Ji-ha called ‘white-shadow’ through the interactions of aesthetic principles that mutually connect with each other.
The characteristics of the sublimity that can be examined in Kim Ji-ha’s theory of extreme energy, the literary essence of ‘white shadow’, are as follows: First, it views the poetic forms and types at the level of promoting and harmonizing both beauty and ugliness at the same time while using the ugliness as a medium. It is noted at the dimension where sense and energy and even spirit are connected with one another, rather than being in the dichotomy of body and mind, or the separate existence of sense and reason of Kant. This overlaps with various discussions of the West on the sublimity but also it is judged to have its own aesthetic originality.
In addition, the issues such as pain or pleasure, contradiction and conflict which are universal subjects in the existing discussions on the sublimity, also exist as a complementarity rather than as being in the dialectical unity.
Furthermore, the point that it also is ever-changing and generating without stop rather than staying as an existence of a fixed type, can be considered to be the characteristics of the sublimity shown in the aesthetic properties of the theory of extreme energy.
