초록

김종삼 시인은 30여 년 활동하며 총238편의 시를 남겼다. 그간 연구자들은 김종삼 시의 특징을 “내용 없는 아름다움”으로 명제화 했다. 시인의 시에서 가져온 표현이지만, 과연 여러 가지 형식 실험과 추상적 이미지, 그리고 압축과 암시의 의미 추구 등에 어울리는 평가였다. 본고는 시인의 평생의 관심사였던 ’죽어가는 자의 고독‘의 해명과 평가에 초점을 맞춘다. 그는 가족의 죽음과 자신의 질병에 무척 괴로워했지만, 끔찍한 모더니티’와 관련된 ‘사회적 죽음’에 집중했다. 이를테면 일상생활을 파괴하는 질병과 전쟁, 집단적 학살과 문화적 소외 등이 그것이다. 이에 따른 존재의 무의미성과 공동체의 해체, 현실의 파편화와 미래의 부재에 대한 탐구와 표현에 힘썼다. 그는 불우한 존재들의 개인적․사회적 죽음을 위로하는 한편 인간 실존의 생명 충동을 끌어올리기 위해 변화와 죽음에 예민했던 한국과 세계의 여러 시인들, 음악가와 화가를 시적 대상으로 계속 초대했다. 이를 통해 죽은 자에 대한 충실한 애도 및 ‘지금 여기’로의 환대의 작업을 정성껏 수행했다. 이때의 ‘애도’는 죽은 자를 잘 보내고 산 자들은 일상으로 잘 돌아오는 전통적 의미를 넘어선다. 죽은 자들의 의미를 늘 현재화함으로써 세상의 빈 구멍을 채우도록 하는 사랑과 생명의 제의였다. 애도의 작업은 죽은 자를 산 자로 동일화하는 대신 ‘지금 여기’로 그들을 불러와 그 활동에 필요한 의미 있는 자리／장소를 제공하는 환대의 실천에 의해 완성된다. 아우슈비츠 학살과 한국전쟁에서의 죽음에 대한 생생한 기억과 재현, 민중과 소시민의 병사와 사체실 안치 정황의 표현, 시인과 예술가들의 죽음 및 죽음 소재 작품의 환기 등이 김종삼 시의 애도와 환대를 대표한다. 김종삼은 유고시로 「아리랑고개」 연작을 남겼다. 이 시들을 통해 자신이 경험한 ‘죽음으로의 고독’을 세상의 보편적 사건으로 가치화하는 한편 자신이 추구한 ‘아름다움’의 향토화와 일반화에 유감없이 성공하게 된다.

영어초록

Poet Kim Jong-sam left total 238 poems working for 30 years or so. Up until now, researchers have come up with the proposition that Kim Jong-sam’s poems are characterized by “beauty without contents”. The expression came from his own poem, but indeed, the evaluation goes well with his experiment in various forms, abstractive images, or his pursuit of meaning from compression and implication. This study focuses on the poet’s lifelong interest, the explanation and appreciation of ‘a dying person’s loneliness’. Although he was seriously tormented by his family’s death and his own disease, he concentrated on ‘social death’ associated with ‘awful modernity’. The examples can be disease and war destroying ordinary lives, massacre, or cultural alienation. On account of that, he strived to explore and describe the hollowness of beings, dismantlement of a community, fragmentation of reality, or absence of the future. In order to console miserable beings for their personal or social death and also elevate the impulse of living for human existence, he kept inviting as poetic objects many poets, musicians, or painters of Korea and the world who had been sensitive about the change and death. Through this, he earnestly carried out faithful lamentation for the dead and the work of hospitality to ‘here, now’. ‘Lamentation’ here is something beyond the traditional meaning of it: to say good-bye to the dead and allow the living to keep leading a usual life. It was a ritual of love and life to make the meaning of the dead always present and fill the void of the world. The work of lamentation is completed not by regarding the dead as the living but by summoning them ‘here, now’ and practicing hospitality to provide a meaningful space / place needed for that activity. The lamentation and hospitality of Kim Jong-sam’s poems are represented by the vivid memories and reproduction of death in the Auschwitz massacre and the Korean War, the people and petit bourgeois’ death from disease, expression on the situation of laying the body in state, the death of poets and artists, and the recalling of works dealing with death. As his posthumous poetry, 「Arirang Gogae」 series are left. These poems allowed him to make ‘loneliness from death’ he had been depicting valuable as the world’s universal incidence and also succeed satisfactorily in localizing and generalizing ‘the beauty’ he had been pursuing as well.
