南北國時代論과 渤海 Diaspora (The Theory of the Period of South & North Countries and Balhae Diaspora)

초록

이 글은 남북국시대론과 발해 멸망에 대한 이해 방향의 모색이다. 현재 남북국시대론은 남북분단시기를 통해 축소된 남북국론에서, 후자는 사료를 통한 내분설 전개에 비중이 놓여 있다. 또 전자는 사학사 측면에서, 후자는 사실과 해석에서의 접근이 되어 왔다. 그러나 이 두 관점을 결코 분리될 수 없는 논점임을 파악하였으며 그 지향하는 것은 남북국시대론과 발해 멸망의 원형적 인식 확보와 발전적 해석이다. 구체적으로는 남북국시대론과 발해멸망관은 새로운 남북국사의 단계별 인식과 디아스포라 관점의 발해유민의 이동을 통해 일체화시켜 보고자 하였다. 그리하여 남북국시대의 확장을 통해 유득공에 의해 제기된 남북국시대론을 분단시대에 계승하여 갈 수 있게 되었다. 특히 근현대 한민족의 만주와 연해주이주 디아스포라는 바로 남북국시대의 최종단계이기도 하였다.
그리고 또 하나 남북국시대론의 의미는 발해를 한국사의 일원으로 당당히 자리매김 하는 것이라는 데 있다. 그래서 조선후기 실학자들에 의해 종합적으로 인식된 남북국시대론은 우리나라의 자생적 이론이요, 현대에서도 유효한 논의임을 재확인하였다. 이글에서는 논지 전개를 위해 현재 각 분야에서 새롭게 조명받는 Diaspora(디아스포라) 관점을 적용하여 보았다. 나아가 이 관점은 어느 특정 민족의 근현대 시기 이산에 한정시킬 수 없다는 것도 확인하였다. 남북국시대론의 범위 확장처럼, 코리아 디아스포라는 이미 진행되고 있는 고대 한국민의 Diaspora로 확대하여 가고 있음을 파악하였다. 바로 이 시각으로 접근하였을 때, 남북국시대론과 발해멸망은 전혀 이질적인 사항이 아니라, 발해사 위상의 올바른 정립에 있어서도 큰 방향을 잡아 줄 수 있을 것이다. 발해 멸망으로 인해 발생한 발해 유민들은 고려로 지속적으로 망명하여 고려의 후삼국 통합과 발전에 기여를 하였던 것이라 할 수 있다.
시대 인식과 역사해석에는 상호 보완적 이해로 이어갈 수 있는 것이라 본다. 이 글에서는 남북국시대론과 발해멸망 이해를 같이 대비하여 봄으로써 두 방면의 연구 모두 한계를 드러내고 있음을 파악하고, 앞으로 이 분야 연구의 방향을 모색하여 보았다. 그럼으로써 남북국시대의 본래의 의미를 재인식할 수 있고, 발해멸망 이해 역시 새롭게 이해할 수 있는 계기가 마련되었으면 한다.

영어초록

Until now, ‘The Theory of the Period of South and North Countries(Silla and Balhae)‘(南北國時代論) and the study on the fall of Balhae (渤海) are used to consider as two distinct types. A is the study of the perspective how Balhae can be seen, B is the study of specific historical facts which can be regarded as Balhae topic. However, in current research, the two topics are not covered together. This is due to the fact that the former which is determined as specifically history of history and the latter which is distinguished as the study of history are treated as disparately.
However, these two types are seen as they cannot be divided with dualistic distinction which is simple history of history and the study of history. The meaning of‘ The Theory of the Period of South and North Countries’that the histoy of Balhae kingdom emphasizes and the study of the fall of Balhae can be considered as they are related together.
‘The Theory of the Period of South and North Countries’which took form through Lyu, Dug-gong (柳得恭) is the viewpoint which can actively claim that Balhae is a member of Korean history. This argument led to the action and the ideology of the independence movement during the Japanese Ruling Era. But, after 20th century(era of division), currently ‘The Theory of the Period of South and North Countries’seems to be emphasized as the model of unification between the two Koreas. Therefore, today we are dealing with transformational theory of the Period of South and North Countries. Although it is obvious that Balhae is the main agent of Korean history, ‘the South and North Dynasties’(南北國; Balhae and Silla) is used to perceived as overlapping the division of South and North Korea which is the division of adversarial political structure.
Recognition of times and interpretation of history can be led to the complementary comprehension. In this article, by comparing ‘The Theory of the Period of South and North Countries’and the comprehension of the fall of Balhae, there can be found the fact that both two types of the studies reveal limitation. Thus, not only can we have a new understanding of the essential meaning of‘ The Theory of the Period of South and North Countries’, but also the understanding of the fall of the Balhae Dynasty as well.
