초록

가브리엘 마르셀은 그의 철학적 사유는 두 가지 관심들에 의하여 지배되어 왔다고 말한다. 그중 하나는 ‘존재에 대한 요청’이고 다른 하나는 ‘개별적 존재들이다. 이는 다시 각각의 개체성에 의하여 파악된 존재들과 그들을 묶어주는 신비의 관계에 대한 관심이다. 마르셀에 있어서 존재한다는 것은 존재에 참여한다는 것이다. 고립된 실존의 경험 같은 것은 없다. 마르셀에 있어서 형이상학은 존재에의 갈망의 표현으로 존재의 신비를 밝히는 것이다. 존재론적 신비로 가는 구체적 접근들은 사랑, 희망, 성실 같은 충만함의 가치들의 설명 가운데에서 존재론적 요청에 따라 이루어져야한다. 전체 자아가 하나의 충만함의 원천으로 회귀함이 없이는 형이상학적 사유는 불가능하다. 사랑과 성실은 타인의 영속성과 절대적 가치에 대한 인정 즉 타인의 존재에 대한 인정에 의해서만 가능하다. 충분히 발전된 사랑 안에는 영원한 지속에 대한 요구가 있다. 희망은 본질적으로 창조적인 힘에 대한 하나의 호소로서, 희망은 자신을 앞으로 내던지는 것이 아니고 하나의 절대적인 것을 위하여 절대적으로 물러나는 것이다. 타인의 현전으로부터 유래하는 하나의 호소에 대한 응답으로서의 성실은 영원한 것에 대한 인식이다. 그것은 존재론적인 항구성을 나타낸다. 수응의 개념은 타인에 대하여 열린 마음과 겸손으로 접근해야 한다는 것이다. 우리는 대인관계나 신과의 관계에 있어서나 정신적인 면을 새로이 일깨워야 한다. 마르셀은 철학을 정신의 요청에 의하여 존재의 신비나 초월의 경험에 대한 조명 같은 궁극적인 실재에 대한 구체적 접근으로 간주한다. 그의 철학은 전 철학적 단계의 형이상학적 예비연구에 머무른다는 평가를 받기도 하지만 진지하다는 느낌을 준다. 마르셀은 철학의 근원에는 존재론적 겸손의 태도가 있어야 된다고 한다. 이는 마르셀이 존재의 가치를 흡수하고 전개해 나가는 기초이다.

Gabriel Marcel says his philosophical thought as a whole has always been dominated by two interests which may at first seem contradictory; the first of these is what I shall call the exigence of being; the latter of these is the obsession with beings taken in their individuality but also affected by the mysterious relations which link them together. For Marcel, to be is to participate in being. There is no such thing as an isolated experience of existence. It seems that he accepted the view a priori that the more we are able to know the individual being, the more we shall be oriented a grasp of being as such. Metaphysics is, for Marcel, the expression of the appetite of being and the elucidation of the mystery of being. Concrete approaches to the mystery of being, that is, of certain data which are spiritual in their own right, such as love, hope and fidelity should be analysed through the investigation of the ontological exigence. No metaphysical thought is possible without a conversion of the whole self to a source of fullness. Love and fidelity imply an absolute vow that can only be made in the light of a recognition of the eternity and absolute value of the other, that is of the being of the other. Within love as it is fully developed, there is an exigence for perenniality. Hope is essentially an appeal to a creative power. To hope is not to thrust oneself forward, but to retire absolutely in favor of an absolute. As a response to an appeal that arises from the presence of the other, fidelity is the recognition of something permanent. It is the idea of an ontological permanence as opposed to the permanence of an essence or a formal arrangement. The notion of availability is the idea that we should approach other human beings with an openness and humility. We need a reawakening of all that is spiritual in humanity, including our sense of the transcendent, both in interpersonal relationships and in our relationship with God. It is clear that Marcel envisions philosophy as a matter of concrete approaches to the ultimate reality, involving the illumination of the mystery of being and the experience of transcendence by the exigence of spirit. Consideration of these has led some to relegate Marcel’ thought to the domain of the pre-philosophical discussions or speculative mysticism. However, his philosophy seems to be authentic. Marcel believes that there should be an ontological attitude of humility in the depth of philosophy.
