연등회의 시대구분론 재고 (A Review of the Periodization of Yeondeunghoe)

초록

연등회의 시대구분은 일반적으로 국가별 시대구분에 따라 서술하고 있다. 하지만 연등회는 시대에 따라 설행주체의 중심축이 이동하였다. 이에 따라 본고에서는 왕조(국가)별이 아닌 설행주체를 중심으로 크게 국가주도기, 민관이행기, 민간주도기의 세 시기로 구분하였다.
첫째는 국가주도기로, 신라시대와 중세 양반사회였던 고려시대를 거쳐 조선시대에공식적으로 연등회가 폐지되는 세종 13년(1431)까지를 말한다. 『고려사』와 『조선왕조실록』 등의 정사류를 중심으로 한 기록이 다수를 차지하고 있다. 여기에 따르면 주로 국가와 왕실에서 설행하는 연등회가 주류를 이루고 있다.
둘째는 민관이행기로, 관과 민간이 각각 설행하는 시기이면서도, 왕실이나 일제 등지배체제 중심에서 민간으로 중심축이 이동한다는 측면에서의 이행(移行)의 의미를 지니고 있다. 고려와 조선초기의 유풍이 남아 행해지는 시기이지만, 민간에서의 설행이문헌상에 두드러지게 드러나는 시기이다.
셋째는 민간주도기로, 해방(1945년 8월) 이후 1946년부터 지금까지로 불교계가 자율적으로 연등회를 설행한 시기이다. 이 시기는 1946~1995년까지의 종교축제기인 1기와불교적인 불교인들의 축제에서 1996년 이후의 대중축제로의 전환을 꾀하는 2기로 나눌수 있다.

영어초록

Yeondeunghoe (燃燈會) has been changed in many ways in the aspects of its main agents, contents, and forms for 1000 years. Thus, it cannot be understood as the appearance or the form in a certain one period or at a certain one time.
So as to examine the Yeondeunghoe as a festival, around its implementation bodies I divided the history of the Yeondeunghoe into three periods: the state-dominated period (國家主導期), the intergradational period led by civilian and public bodies (民官履行期, 民官移行期), the civilian-dominated period (民間主導期).
The state-dominated period (國家主導期) is the time during which the festival was held as a national ceremony by a nation or royal family. From the Silla Dynasty through the Goryeo Dynasty to the 13th year of King Sejong's reign during the Joseon Dynasty(1431), the Sangweon Yeondeunghoe (上元 燃燈會) on the 15th of the first lunar month, the second lunar month Yeondeunghoe, and the Buddha's Birthday Yeondeunghoe in the fourth lunar month were held. A special Yeondeunghoe as occasion demands was also held. There were Yeondeungdogam (燃燈都監) and its departments as the implementation body of the festival.
The intergradational period led by civilian and public bodies (民官履行期, 民官移行 期) can be divided into two stages. The first stage covers from the 13th year of King Sejong's reign during the Joseon Dynasty (1431), when the Yeondeunghoe was actually abolished, to the Korean Empire era; and the second stage is the Japanese colonial era.
This period is the time during which the festival had been established as the Buddha's birthday Yeondeunghoe and at the same time its main agents were changed from government offices led by royal family to civilian organizations.
The civilian-dominated period (民間主導期) from the year 1946 after the liberation from the Japanese Empire to the present day is the time during which the festival has been held by civilian Buddhist community. This period can also be divided into two stages: the religious festival era until the year 1995 and the era in which efforts to convert the Yeondeunghoe into people's festival have been made.
