초록

장로교는 성경-역사적 기원을 가진 역사적 교회이다. 그것은 성경의 교회 정체를 포괄하는 개념이다. 장로교의 본질은 종교개혁의 ‘오직 성경’의 원리에 기초한 기독론적 교회론에서 찾아볼 수 있다. 이러한 관점은 제네바의 종교개혁자 칼빈에 의해서 구체적으로 전개되었다. 칼빈은 교회의 표지와 함께 성도의 표지를 강조하였다. 교회는 온전한 교리의 일치와 형제적 사랑이 그리스도 안에서 하나의 고리로 연결되는 주님의 몸이라고 여겼다. 성도는 교회의 지체로서 그리스도와 신비한 연합을 하고 있다. 이는 그분의 의를 전가 받아서 성도의 거룩한 삶을 살아갈 뿐만 아니라 교회의 직분을 감당함으로써 함께 자라가야 한다는 교회론적 의미를 환기시킨다. 칼빈의 영향을 받은 녹스는 예정론을 기독론적 교회론으로 풀어갔다. 녹스는 하나님의 뜻이 단지 자의적이거나 추상적이지 않으며 그리스도 안에서 작정된 구원의 경륜으로 역사상 나타난다는 것을 강조하였다. 녹스는 칼빈과 마찬가지로 가시적 교회와 비가시적 교회의 역동적 통일성을 추구하였다. 녹스는 그리스도의 교회의 머리되심이 단지 비가시적 교회의 차원에 머무는 것이 아니라 지상의 가시적 교회에서도 참 교회의 표지를 나타내는 기본 원리로 작용함을 말하였다. 녹스는 하나님의 뜻이 그리스도 안에서 이루어졌다는 사실로부터 성도의 선택의 법정적 의의를 추구하였다. 웨스트민스터 신앙고백서는 칼빈과 녹스의 신학이 잘 용해된 고백서이다. 무엇보다 하나님의 사랑과 그리스도의 공로를 두 요소로 하는 언약신학의 본질을 추구하고자 하였다. 그리스도는 구속사적으로 다 이루신 공로를 구원론적으로 그 서정 가운데 적용해 주신다. 그런데 이러한 역사는 오직 그리스도의 계속적 중보로만 가능하다. 웨스트민스터 신앙고백서가 교리와 삶을 함께 아우르고 있다는 평가를 받는 점이 이로부터 기인한다. 박형룡은 가시적 교회와 비가시적 교회의 역동적인 관계를 깊이 고려하여 양자에 모두 보편적 성격이 있다는 점을 강조하였다. 그리하여 교회를 단지 “조직체”로만 보지 않고 “유기체”로 여겨서 머리이신 그리스도와 연합한 지체들이 영원한 언약을 성취하는 지상의 역사적 장으로서 교회를 논했다. 한국 장로교에 흐르는 이러한 신학적 맥은 기독론으로부터 구원론 혹은 교회론을 분리시키고 교회의 정체와 직분과 사역을 단지 현상적으로만 파악하고자 하는 현대 조류에 경종을 울린다.

영어초록

Presbyterianism is a historical church that has a Biblical-historical origin. It is a concept that encompasses the whole range of church polity and order. The essence of Presbyterianism can be found in the Christological ecclesiology based upon the Reformed principle of Sola Scriptura. Such a point of view was unfolded, in detail, by Calvin, the Reformer from Geneva, who emphasized nota fidelium along with nota ecclesiae. He regarded the Church as the Lord’s body on which the wholesome unity of the doctrines and brotherly love are joined in Christ with one chain. As parts of the Church, believers are joined with Christ in mystical union, which calls one’s attention to the ecclesiological significance that we must grow together not only to lead a holy living with His righteousness imputed onto us but also to play our role of office in the Church. Knox, whom Calvin had a big impact on, unraveled his view on predestination with Christological ecclesiology. Knox underscores that God’s will is not merely arbitrary or abstract, but discloses itself by the economy of salvation that has been decreed in Christ. Knox, like Calvin, pursued a dynamic unity of the visible and the invisible Church, even in relation to the doctrine of eternal decree. According to Knox, the doctrine of recapitulation does not remain on the level of the invisible Church but works as a fundamental principle that may exhibit a mark of true church for the visible church. Knox supported the idea of forensic righteousness for selection of saints from the fact that God’s will has been accomplished in Christ. The Westminster Confession of Faith, the confession in which the theologies of Calvin and Knox are well-fused together, intended to pursue the essence of the covenant theology, which takes God’s love and Christ’s works as its two elements. It also highlights the imputation of Christ’s righteousness, being applied now soteriologically according to ordo salutis, after having been accomplished according to redemptive history. However, such a work can only be possible with Christ’s continual intercession. This is the reason why the Confession is regarded as joining the doctrine and Christian living together. Taking deeply into account the dynamic relationship between the visible and invisible Church, Hyung Ryong Park assumed catholicity in both Churches. Thus, he regarded the Church not only as an organization but also as an organic body, synonymous to a historical societas on earth, where the bodies joined to Christ as head are fulfilling the eternal covenant. Such a theological vein flowing in the Korean Presbyterian Church rings the bell against the modern trend, which tries to separate Christology from soteriology or ecclesiology, and to determine the identity, office and work of the Church phenomenologically only. This paper is to seek the root of the Korean Presbyterian Church by comparatively investigating these three prominent theologians and a creed.
