초록

이 논문은 헤르만 바빙크의 인식론의 구조와 핵심적인 내용에 관심을 두고 작성되었다. 바빙크의 인식론은 철학과 신학을 함께 포괄하는 구조를 갖고 있다. 먼저, 철학적 관심사와 관련하여 관념론과 경험론을 논의의 대상으로 삼는다. 연구자에 따르면, 바빙크에게 있어서 인간의 인식은 본유적으로 주어진 것만도 아니고 경험에 의해서 형성되는 것만도 아니다. 인간의 인식은 한편으로는 타고난 차원을 갖고, 다른 한편으로는 경험을 통하여 습득하는 차원도 갖는다. 그러나 타고난 것이든 경험된 것이든 이 둘은 인간의 정신의 작용에 의하여 구체적인 개념을 이룬다. 인간의 정신의 작용을 통하여 타고난 것과 경험되는 것이 인식적 차원의 지식으로 개념화된다는 것이다. 이런 점에서 바빙크는 관념론을 비판하고 동시에 경험론을 비판한다.
다음으로, 신학과 관련하여 바빙크는 진정한 인식적 토대를 확보하기 위해서 모든 존재하는 것의 기반 혹은 토대로서 하나님을 상정해야 한다고 밝힌다. 존재하는 모든 것은 하나님의 사유에서 먼저 기인하고 다음으로 그것을 현실화하는 창조행위와 함께 실재하기 시작한다는 것이다. 그런데 하나님의 창조행위는 일종의 계시행위와 같아서 창조를 통해서 실재하는 자연세계는 하나님을 파악할 수 있는 객관적 계시로서 인식의 객관적인 토대를 이룬다. 타락이후로 바빙크의 신 인식론에서 객관적인 계시는 성경과 그 성경을 통해서 읽혀진 자연이다. 이와 함께 신 인식의 주관적인 토대가 있는데 그것이 바로 성령의 사역이다. 성령의 사역은 성경계시의 영감과 관련되고 동시에 성경을 읽고 하나님의 계시의 핵심에 도달하는 해석자의 해석적 과정에 개입하는 것으로 구체화된다. 이 때 성령만이 진정한 계시의 해석자가 되어서 인간의 정신에 역사하게 된다.

This paper focused on the structure and content of Herman Bavinck’s epistemology. The structure of Bavinck’s epistemology includes both philosophy and theology. First, related to philosophical concerns, idealism and empiricism are subjects of discussion. According to the present researcher, Bavinck treats human cognition as not just innate but neither just formed through experience. On the one hand, human cognition is present from birth, but on the other hand, it is acquired through experience. However, whether innate or acquired by experience, these two things are grasped as concrete concepts through the working of the human mind. Through the working of the human mind, the innate and the acquired are conceptualized into knowledge from the cognitive dimension.
Next, related to theological concerns, in order to secure his epistemological foundation, Bavinck says the basis or foundation of all existing things is to come into contact with God Himself. All existing things must first originate as the possession of God, and then exist through the act of realization in creation. However, as God’s act of creation is similar to a kind of revelational act, the natural world that exists as an act of creation is an objective revelation capable of grasping God. It is an objective foundation of knowledge. The objective revelation in Bavinck’s epistemology of God is the Bible and the natural world read through the Bible. Similarly, there is a subjective foundation for an awareness of God. This is the work of the Holy Spirit. The work of the Holy Spirit is related to the inspiration of the biblical revelation and at the same time intervention into the interpreters’ interpretive process of reading the Bible and arriving at the core message of the revelation of God. At this time, only the Holy Spirit, becomes the interpreter of true revelation and works on the human mind.
As such, according to Bavinck, humans created as personal beings, through the use of the mind that God has given alongside creation, can medicate creation and the Bible and understand its meaning, and at the same time, through the Holy Spirit working on the mind, acquire a sound and correct consciousness. However, secular philosophical cognition is always limited by a distorted judgment. Similarly, it is only through theological cognition a true understanding of God is made possible. However, even in the realm of theology, to a certain extent, based on one’s acceptance of the work of the Holy Spirit, diverse forms of theology appear. Related to this, as a member of a community of professing faith under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, doing theology is viewed as important.
