초록

사제와 더불어 가장 기본적인 불교 교리는 十二因緣이다. 십이인연은 붇다의 깨달음이기 때문이다. 초기경전을 비롯하여 대승경전에 이르기까지 항상 등장하는 십이인연을 대승경전에서는 대승적으로 변환시켜 해석하는 경우가 대부분이다. 그럼에도 대승경전에 나오는 십이인연을 가지고 초기불교의 관점으로만 국한시켜 이해한다면 그것은 오해라고 할 수 있다.
십이인연에 대한 대승적 이해가 어려운 상황에서 그것을 실현한 이는 중국의 天台智顗이다. 智顗는 『법화현의』에서 사종의 십이인연을 통해 일체경의 모든 십이인연설을 정리하였다. 단순히 초기 아함의 십이인연만이 아니라 대승까지도 막론한 십이인연을 모두 받아 들여 네 개의 형식에 따라 정리한 것이다.
즉 초기 아함이나 아비달마논서에서 나오는 십이인연을 천태는 生滅의 십이인연으로 묶고 있으며, 반야공사상에 의한 십이인연을 천태는 無生의 십이인연으로 정리하고 있고, 공가중으로 이어지면서 마음을 강조하는 십이인연을 천태는 無量의 십이인연으로 밝히고 있으며, 공가중이 하나로 되는 원융의 십이인연을, 천태는 無作의 십이인연으로 설명하고 있다.
生滅의 십이인연·無生의 십이인연·無量의 십이인연·無作의 십이인연으로 나눈 천태의 십이인연은, 경전과 교설의 특색에 따라 일체의 십이인연을 정리하였다고 할 것이다.
또한 그것을 단순히 나열하는데 그치지 않고 경전에 근거하여 開顯하고 觀心하고 있다. 開顯함으로써 십이인연을 實相의 십이인연으로 거듭나게 하고, 觀心함으로써 십이인연을 자기 마음으로 돌리고 있다. 십이인연의 본연의 뜻이 되살려진 것이다. 이와 같이 천태의 십이인연은 초기 아함에 머무는 십이인연론과는 전혀 차원을 달리하는 것으로서 대승 십이인연의 창조적 계승이라 해도 과언은 아닐 것이다.

영어초록

The most fundamental doctrine in Buddhism is Twelvefold Conditions of Dependent Origination (十二因緣論) with The Four Noble Truths (四諦). It is because that Twelvefold Conditions of Dependent Origination appears as a main doctrine with Mahayana Sūtra as well as the early's Sutra. Twelvefold Conditions of Dependent Origination which is included in most doctrines of Buddhism is interpreted in the respect of Mahayana after converting in the Mahayana Sūtra. In spite of that if you understand Twelvefold Conditions of Dependent Origination in Mahayana Sūtra only with respect of the early's Buddhism, it will be misunderstanding.
It was Great Monk T'ien-T'ai (天台大師) in China who realized understanding in the respect of Mahayana on the Twelvefold Conditions of Dependent Origination. Chih-i (智顗) organized entirely a view on the Twelvefold Conditions of Dependent Origination with those of The Four Noble in the Profound Meaning of the Lotus Sūtra (法華玄義). It goes without saying that Twelvefold Conditions of Dependent Origination by T'ien-t'ai are not simple interpretations about Twelvefold Conditions of Dependent Origination on the early day's anagamin but an interpretation which unfolded itself without distinction of Mahayana or Hinayana Sūtra.
So to speak, T'ien-'ai put together Twelvefold Conditions of Dependent Origination in the early's anagamin or Abhidharma discourse with those of the Arising and Perishing (生滅), he organized Twelvefold Conditions of Dependent Origination on the emptiness idea of the Wisdom with those of the Non-arising (無生), he made clear Twelvefold Conditions of Dependent Origination by emphasizing on the mind along with non-substantiality·provisional existence·the middle (空假中) with those of the Innumerable and he explained Twelve Conditions of Dependent Origination on the Complete and Get into One (圓融) which become non-substantiality ·provisional existence·the middle into one with those the Actionless (無作). That is, he has systematically organized Twelve Conditions of Dependent Origination with the Arising and perishing·Non-arising·Innumerable·Actionless.
Twelve Conditions of Dependent Origination by T'ien-t'ai are not only to enumerate but also to open revealing (開顯) and contemplate insight into mind. They were made Twelvefold Conditions of Dependent Origination on the Real Substantial (實相) bear again by opening revealing and revolve into one's mind by contemplating insight into mind (觀心). It means the recovery on the original sense of Twelvefold Conditions of Dependent Origination. As you see Twelvefold Conditions of Dependent Origination by T'ien-t'ai are worth saying an recreation of those as a different level in comparison with those in the early's anagamin. As well it is not too much to say that there are at least no theories on Twelvefold Conditions of Dependent Origination in compare with it.
