순자 감정론(情論) 연구 (A Study on Xunzi's theory of Emotions)

초록

일반적으로 이성적 반성이나 추론으로 도덕 주체에 의미부여하는 이성주의 윤리학적 시각에서 순자이론도 해석되었다. 이때 순자이론에서 예(ritual)는 인간의 감정을 통제하는 수단이고, 인간의 감정은 예(禮)라는 외재적 양식에 대해 수동적이고 교화를 기다리는 대상이라는 부정적 의미를 함축한다고 해석될 수 있다.
그러나 순자이론에서도 이성 그 자체만으로는 행위자의 행위동기를 유발할 수 없다고 보고, 의지가 행하는 도덕적 행위의 동기형태로서의 행위동기로서, 일종의 추동력으로서 자발성에 기초한 “실천적 감성”이 중시될 수 있다. 감성은 이런 도덕적 행위의 동기구조를 설명하는 정신의 계기라는 의미를 가지는데, 이런 감성 개념이 순자감성론에서도 드러난다고 필자는 생각한다.
또한 이런 감정론의 계보 연구로서 이전 저작인 곽점죽간(郭店竹簡)과 연결해서, 정(情), 기(氣) 개념 등을 살펴보았다. 그들은 정(情)의 ‘자연성’을 중요한 주제로서 서술하기 시작했고, 天命, 性情, 人道 간 관계에 대해서 서술할 때 “정(情)”을 실천적이고 경험적인 특징을 갖는 것으로 서술했다. 또한 그들 역시 인성론에서 감정(情)의 역할을 드러내는 사상을 드러냈다. 곽점죽간(郭店竹簡) 정론(情論)의 이런 특성은 순자의 감정론(情論)과 일관성을 가진다고 보인다.

영어초록

The purpose of this article is to focus on the following theme while conducting a research on Xunzi's theory of emotions. Even in Asian philosophy, there have been some theoretical attempts at constructing an agent of moral subjectivity by way of rational speculation.
In Xunzian philosophy, rituals are a means of controlling human emotions. Thus, some may argue that emotions so controlled in such rituals as an external mode of control may be construed as imbued with passivity and something that awaits only to be edified and reformed.
Notwithstanding this line of rebuttal, however, the author's position on Xunzi in connection with role of human emotions in process of self-cultivation is that the reason itself may not be compelling enough to motivate an agent. Instead, the author believes that "practical emotions" based on spontaneity and as a motivational impetus, should be accorded a much more enlarged role in connection with any motivational action which is subject to morally motivated will power. Construed this way are the emotions as indicative of momentum of mind in exploring the motivational structure underpinning any moral action. In light of this, the author believes that this line of concept of emotions is grounded in Xunzi's theory of emotions.
While reviewing thoroughly the theory propounding that the development of thought of Xunzi is in fact based on the thoughts and notions of Confucianists since the time of Confucius as shown in the cases of "Xing ze ming chu(Human Nature originates from Mandate)"of the Guodian bamboo slips, this article will illuminate the commonality between Xunzi's position on emotions and some issues on "emotions" as revealed in Guodian bamboo slips. They began describing "naturalness" of emotions as an important subject matter. In describing the relationship among the Heavenly Mandate, "xingqing," "rendao", "emotions" were described as imbued with a feature thought to possess pro-active tendency and empirically oriented procilivity. Furthermore, in their theories of human nature, they also revealed the role of "emotions". Among studies on Xunzian theory of emotions, this type of study which illuminates the philosophical genealogy, including philosophical genealogical studies based on the Shanghai bamboo slips and the Guodian bamboo slips.
