폴 틸리히의 상관관계방법론을 통한 기독교 상담방법론 (Paul Tillich’s Method of Correlation and Its Application to Christian Counseling Methodology)

초록

한국교희의 현실은 질적 및 양적성장의 문제를 겪고 있는 시기다. 여러가지 이유 중의 하나는 한국교회가 전통적인 관점을 변하지 않고 문화와 인간에 대한 고정된 관념을 가지고 있기 때문일 것이다. 그래서 인간살아가는 장을 통한 인간의 딜레머 불안 그리고 그들의 질문에 대해 교회에 듣지 않고 있다. 이러한 점에서 기독교상담은 틸리히의 상관관계방법론을 통하여 좀 더 교회와 문화 간의 소통을 하고, 그의 상관관계방법론을 통하여 기독교상담의 정체성을 규명해 보려고 한다. 틸리히의 신학은 인간이 질문하고, 교회와 기독교가 답변을 하는 신학의 구조를 가지고 있다. 그래서 만일 물어보지 않으면 하나님으로 부터의 답은 없는 것이다. 이 물어보고 답변하느 과정이 인간을 하나님에게 근접하게 한다. 현재 우리가 가지고 있는 대부분의 금기와 규정은 타율성의 시대에 만들어 진것이다. 이러한 관점에서 형성된 규정은 자율성과 타율성의 긴장을 가지지 않은 것이기 때문에 창의적인 답이 주어질수없다. 틸리히는 이 창의적인 답을 얻기 위해서 심층심리학과 실존주의의 통찰이 기독교에 들어와야 한다고 본다. 그리고 이 두가지 도구의 긴장은 타율성으로 굳어진 규범을 새롭게 하여 생명력이 나타나게 한다. 그리고 이 두가지 도구는 인간이 가진 어두운 면과 밝은 면을 동시에 볼 수 있도록 해서, 인간이 가진 동물적 자기와 상징적 자기의 양면성을 보도록 한다. 이러한 틸리의 상관관계론 방법에서 제시하는 심층심리학과 실존주의는 기독교상담의 세계를 더 통찰력있는 학문으로 만들것이다.

영어초록

The Korean church is suffering a crisis from a lack of qualitative and quantitative growth. Probably there are lots of reason for the crisis. But one, I believe, is that the church has not changed its traditional perspectives on human beings and culture, and it is not paying attention to human contexts in which human dilemmas and existential anxieties appear. The church is repeating its own traditional answers without listening to the concerns, anxieties, and questions of people. In this perspective, the purpose of this article is to apply Paul Tillich’s method of correlation to the Christian counseling methodology to make it more effective.
Tillich’s suggests that people have to ask questions about human existence and that theology must give answers based on these questions. If there are no questions, then theology has no answers.
Answers come only in response to questions. This process brings us close to the will of God. What Tillich considers are religious taboos,rules and norms constructed in the periods of heteronomy. Thus these things should be questions, because there will be no creative answers given to human beings without tensions between heteronomy and autonomy. These questions span the boundary between heteronomy and autonomy. The questions cause tension and fear, but they are necessary. In this sense, depth psychology and existentialism are two important tools to investigate human beings and the boundary.
These tools illuminate the human condition, and allow us to approach more closely a human being’s existential problems and anxieties. These insights help us to see the human’s positive side of the symbolic self and a negative side of the animal self, which focuses on only selfish purposes. All these academic endeavors and insights make us to realize that human beings live with a conflict within themselves.
Not only humans’ ambiguities in view of depth psychology, but also human being’s anxiety in a given time and space is another important agenda which has to be dealt with by Christian counseling.
Because humans are limited by time and space, they feel the anxiety of death. Without knowing exactly this anxiety, we are controlled by it. And it leads to an unbalanced life where we try to avoid the anxiety of death. This death anxiety is a given one, but when we accept it we may live a more balanced life.
Christian counseling should be exploring the two areas emphasized by Tillich in order to understand human inner conflicts and desires. Questions raised by these fields will help Christian counselors to see human ambiguities and lead them to answers that are close to the genuine meanings.
