초록

이 논문은 현대의 환경 위기 속에서 “人物性同異論”(인물성동이론)이 가진 신학적 의미와 통찰을 살펴보려는 시도이다. 이 글에서 필자는 본 논쟁과 연관된 조선주자학자들의 철학적 관념들을 현대 기독교윤리학적이고 성경적인 입장에서 분석하고자 한다.
일반적으로 湖洛論爭(호락논쟁)으로 알려진 이 논쟁은 18세기 조선주자학자들 사이에 이루어진 것으로 사단칠정론과 더불어 조선 주자학의 가장 대표적인 논쟁이다. 이 논쟁은 이이 계열에서 촉발되었으며 대표적으로 한원전과 이간 사이에 진행되었다. 이 논쟁은 인간의 본성이 인간을 제외한 다른 자연물과 어떤 차이가 있는가의 문제에 초점을 두며, 이와 연관하여 주자학 자체가 가진 형이상학적인 애매성과난점들을 잘 드러내주고 있다. 두 학파는 각각 주자의 사서 주석에 근거하여 주장을펼쳤으며 性卽理에 대한 해석의 차이, 本然之性에 대한 이해의 차이, 物性에 五常이있는가의 가능성 등 이 세 가지에 대하여 각기 다른 이해를 하고 있다.
오늘날 우리에게 이 인물성동이론은 세 가지 중요한 신학적 통찰을 주는데 이는 첫째로, 이 논쟁에 연관된 두 입장(人物性同論과 人物性異論)은 공히 본성에 관한 문제를 도덕적 관점에서 다루고 있다는 점, 둘째로 하늘과 본성의 존재론적 연관성을 언급하면서 물성에도 도덕적 차원을 인정하고 있다는 점, 마지막 셋째로 자연만물에 대한 인간의 책임성을 공히 강조하고 있다는 점이다. 그러므로 인물성동이론과 연관된 위의 세 가지 통찰은 동아시아의 철학이 현 시대의 간학문적 배경 속에서신학적 연구에 새로운 내용을 소개하고 있기에, 우리에게 서구와 유교적 세계관의 연관성에 대한 새로운 통찰을 제공해 주고 있다고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

This paper seeks to investigate the theological meanings and insights on “The Debate over the Similarity or Differences between the Morality of Humans and Animals”(inmulseong dongi ron 人物性同異論), in contemporary contexts of ecological crisis. I try to analyze the Joseon Confucian scholars’ philosophical ideas over the debate in light of contemporary Christian ethical and biblical perspectives.
This debate, generally known as the Horak debate, a Neo-Confucian polemic among Confucian scholars of Joseon in the eighteenth century, is one of the most important philosophical debates in the Joseon era, along with the Four-Seven (sadan chiljeong) debate in the sixteenth century. This debate is famous as is the dispute over whether and how human nature is distinct from that of other creatures.
The debate, however, revealed ambiguities and difficulties in this central tenet of Neo-Confucian metaphysics.
They engaged in an intense debate surrounding the explanations of human mind, society, and nature based on the Neo-Confucian doctrines of li 理 (“principle”)and qi 氣 (“vital force”), with their three philosophical textual bases of Zhu Xi’s commentary of the Four Books such as the different understanding of “性卽理,” “本然之性,” and “the possibility of the existence of the morality[五常] of animals.”For us, the debate provides three important theological insights: First, both of them understand this debate with ethical perspective, focusing some interconnectedness with Heaven and natures of humans and animals with some ontological dimension(天命之謂性). Second, both of them admits some moral dimension of the nature of animals. Third, both of them emphasizes some moral responsibility of humans to sustain the harmonious condition of all natural surroundings. These three points give us new fresh insights and necessity of dialogue between the Western world-view and the Confucian world-view, because the debate is important to the development of East Asian philosophy and relate to topics of contemporary theological studies in interdisplinary ways.
