엇갈린 행보:연행 중심론과 현장론의 비교 연구 (Crossed Track:A Comparative Study of Performance-Centered Approach and Field-Contextual Study)

초록

이 글은 미국의 연행 중심론과 한국의 현장론간의 비교를 시도한 것이다. 두 연구 방법론의 전개 양상, 내용, 지향점 등에 대해 각각 고찰하고, 이를 바탕으로 비교를 하면서 그 차이를 드러냈다. 두 방법론이 드러내는 차이를 중심으로 논의 결과를 정리해 보면 다음과 같다.
연행 중심론은 즉흥적인 변형, 연행마다 새롭게 창출되는 의미, 의미의 다중성과 충돌 등에 관심을 보인다. 이러한 관심은 곧, ‘보편적이고 영원한 진리 탐색에 저항’, ‘과거 지향적 민속학에서 현재 지향적 민속학으로’, ‘정태적 구조 중심의 논의에서 연행과 사회 문화의 구성 과정 그 자체의 동태적 양상 중시로’라는 인식론적 전환을 말하는 것이다. 연행 중심론은 어떤 규범적인 법칙을 추구하려 하지도 않았으며, 총체성 혹은 전체성과는 거리가 있는 지향점을 가지고 있었다. 어떤 정태적 본질과도 거리가 있는 것이 연행 중심론의 문제의식이었다. 동태적인 과정에 주목하는 연행 중심론은 구성주의적 사유를 선취한 것이라 평가할 수 있다. 학사적 차원에서 본다면 연행 중심론은 인식론적 전환의 궤적을 그리고 있다고 말할 수 있다. 비록 그 전환을 방해하는 진정성 추구의 양상이 보이기는 하지만, 대체적으로 인식론적 전환이라 평가할 수 있는 행보를 하고 있는 것이다.
현장론은 연행 현장, 미시적 접근, 공시적 관점, 가변성 등에 주목하는 연행 중심론의 편향을 넘어서려 했다. 연행 중심론이 상대적으로 덜 중요시한 것들까지 염두에 두면서 변증법적 통합을 시도했다. 하지만 그 시도는 또 다른 편향을 낳았다. 새롭게 염두에 둔 전승 현장, 거시적 접근, 통시적 관점, 지속성 등의 강조로 수렴되는 결과를 낳게 된 것이다. 이러한 결과는 어떤 선험적인 본질에 대한 믿음에서 비롯된 것이다. 모든 연행과 모든 전승을 제어하는 규칙과 규범을 추론하고, 나아가 그 원리를 해명하는 것이 현장론의 목적이라는 점에서 그러하다. 진정한 민속, 온전한 민속, 지속적 전통 등을 곳곳에서 강조하는 것 역시 어떤 선험적으로 가치 있다고 생각되는 것을 미리 상정하고 있음을 말하는 것이다. 그러다보니 현장론은 연행론이 떠났던 처음 자리로 돌아오게 되었다. 기존의 고착되고 정체된 것, 보편적이고 영원한 것에 도전하며 형성이 된 연행 중심론이 처음 출발했던 자리로 다시 돌아와 버린 것이다. 다분히 반구조주의적이며 구성적인 과정을 중요시 하는 출발의 입장에서 다시 구조주의적이며 본질주의적인 출발 이전의 인식으로 돌아가 버리고 있다. 구성주의적 선언과 도전에서 비롯된 현장론이 결국 도전하고 배격했던 그 인식으로 회귀해 버리는 양상이 나타나고 있다.
결국 연행 중심론과 현장론의 행보는 엇갈린다. 연행 중심론이 인식의 전환이라는 어쩌면 혁명적인 궤적을 그리고 있다면, 현장론은 시공간적으로 시야의 확장을 도모하다가 인식론적으로 회귀라는 궤적을 그리고 있다. 연행 중심론의 전환이라는 궤적에는 탈구조주의와 구성주의라는 인식이 주도적인 반면, 현장론의 회귀라는 궤적에는 구조주의와 본질주의가 자리하고 있다. 서로 다른 인식론적 지반 위에서 연행 중심론과 현장론은 자리하고 있다. 한때 잠시 만나는 듯 했지만, 현장론은 다시 돌아가 버렸다.

영어초록

This paper is a comparative study of performance-centered approach and field-contextual study. I investigate unfold aspects, contents, aim of performance-centered approach and field-contextual study respectively, and bring out the differences through the comparison those. The result of discussion on the differences of two methodology is as follow.
The performance-centered approach pay attention to emergent variation, new meaning which is created every performance, multiplicity and conflict of meaning etc. That attention imply epistemological turn which are ‘resistant of an inquiry into the nature of universal and eternal truth’, ‘from the past-intention folklore to the present-intention folklore’, ‘from a discussion of static structure to an attach impotance to dynamic aspects of construction process of performance and social culture’. The performance-centered approach do not inquire into the normative rule. The think of performance-centered approach is a far cry from any static essence. It can be estimated that the performance-centered approach which pay attention to a dynamic process is the preoccupation of constructivist thinking. Even though It seems that authenticity which interrupt the turn is seeked, We can say that the performance-centered approach leave the trajectory of epistemological turn in terms of folklore study.
The field-contextual study try to overcome a tendency of the performance-centered approach which is inclined toward performing field, microscopic approach, synchronic perspective, variability etc. Mindful of the performance-centered approach to neglect things, the field-contextual study try to dialectical integration. However that attempt produce another inclination which is inclined toward traditional field, macroscopic approach, diachronic perspective, durability, etc. That result from a belief of a priori essence. The purpose of field-contextual study is reasoning of rule and norm which control every performance and tradition, and explanation of that fundamentals. The emphasis of authentic folk, continuous traditions also imply that a priori thing which is supposed to worthy is establish in advance. And then the purpose of field-contextual study return to the beginning place from which the performance-centered approach is departed. The performance-centered approach which challenge the static, the universal, the eternal return to the beginning place. From the viewpoint of departure which is anti-structuralism and consider a constructive process, return to the recognition of before departure which is structuralism and essentialism.
In consequence, track of performance-centered approach and field-contextual study are crossed. As for the performance-centered approach leave the trajectory of ‘epistemological turn’, the field-contextual study leave the trajectory of ‘epistemological return’. Post-structualism and constructivism are dominant in the trajectory of performance-centered approach, but on the other hand structuailism and constructivism are dominant in the trajectory of field-contextual study. On the different base, performance-centered approach and field-contextual study each settle down. At one time two methodology meet a little while, performance-centered approach return to the old place.
