초록

The implied author of John’s Gospel tried to embody the already deified and glorified cosmic Jesus, absolute reality, with human’s phenomenal reality in the experiential world. In it, Johannine Christology is skillfully characterized with a very unique literary scheme, that is, seven sēmeia stories and seven egō eimi self-statements by Jesus, an upāya Gospel, particularly geared to the rival groups in the Johannine community. The Johannine upāya scheme begins with characterizing Jesus’ immutable absolute deity as the Logos of creating power and at the same time immanently reifying his mutable relative humanity depending on the surrounding world such as vine, way, light, bread, shepherd, sheep-gate, and etc. This upāya Gospel is purported explanatory and apologetic or even polemical, in a way that spiritual superiority cannot be proven just by any claim of absoluteness or transcendence until it must be experienced in phenomenal world. The implied author, wished to stabilize Jesus tradition, was seriously struggling with daunting tasks of such reification, vivifying transcendence through experience, object through concept, revelation of reality through phenomena. For it, the miraculous sign story of Feeding Five Thousands (John 6) is interpreted exemplary. It is a strong propagation to metaphorically ingest Jesus’ flesh and blood, for the eternal life is given only to those who willingly participate in Jesus’ suffering for the love of the world. The rival groups were requested to accept that the Absolute always dwells in the mind and in the transient ephemeral world. The Absolute is evinced by engagement. Hence, the cosmic Jesus, the infinite, dwells in this visible finite realm to be experienced. Jesus the Logos asarkos as the Absolute Emptiness now becomes full by his extensively various characters as the Logos ensarkos contingent upon his specific time and space. This coalition is according to Jesus’ deliberate love of the suffering world, which is solemnly to be replicated by his genuine followers, organically connecting to his flesh and blood by ingesting. Now Jesus’ mystery breathes here and now in the very ephemeral world to be visible and experienced, which is the true miracle of this Gospel.
