『朱子語類』 <독서법>에 나타난 新意論 (The Shin-ui Theory(新意論) in Reading Method of Juja-eolyu (朱子語類) and Its Significance in a Reading Theory History)

초록

본고는 주자가 『주자어류』 <독서법>에서 밝힌 新意 탐색 방법, 新意의 수용과 실천의 내용을 분석하고, 분석의 내용을 토대로 주자의 新意論이 한국 고전 독서론사 전개에 기여한 역할을 논의하였다. 결과를 제시하면 첫째 주자는 도리를 탐색하는 과정을 설명하면서 세 가지 新意 탐색 방법을 제시하였다. ‘熟讀을 통한 신의 탐색 방법’, ‘討論을 통한 신의 탐색 방법’, 그리고 ‘講解를 통한 신의 탐색 방법’이 그것이다. 이 세 가지 방법 중 ‘熟讀을 통한 신의 탐색 방법’만 그 자체 독자적 완결성을 띠고 나머지는 독자성이 없다. 도리의 확인을 위한 신의 탐색 활동은 어떠한 경우에도 ‘熟讀을 통한 신의 탐색 활동’이 전제되어야 한다는 것을 의미한다. 그리고 ‘熟讀을 통한 신의 탐색’ 활동을 전제한 신의 탐색 활동은 어떠한 경우의 수라도 가능하다. 둘째 주자는 신의 탐색 활동 그 자체는 도리의 발견 과정이면서도 살아 움직이지 않는 도리[不活 道理]를 살아 움직이는 도리[會活 道理]로 만드는 활동도 된다고 보았다. 그렇기 때문에 신의 탐색 활동은 독자가 도리를 내면화하기 위한 전제 조건이 된다. 셋째 독서를 통해 신의를 왜 탐색하느냐는 물음에 대해 ‘신의 탐색 활동은 도리의 수용과 실천을 위해서이다’라고 할 수 있다. 신의가 없는 수용과 실천 그 자체는 성립할 수 없기 때문이다. 이를 통해 볼 때 신의 탐색을 통한 도리의 발견이 없으면, 도리의 내면화도 불가능하며, 도리의 실천도 이루어질 수 없다. 또한 도리의 발견이라는 것도 신의 탐색의 활동이 없으면 달성될 수 없는 것이다. 이것은 신의 탐색 활동이 주자의 독서 목적을 달성하기 위한 인식론적 토대가 된다는 것을 의미한다. 마지막으로 한국 고전 독서론에서 차지하는 주자 신의론의 의의는 두 가지로 대별된다. 하나는 계승의 면에서 주자의 신의론이 도리의 발견을 위한 인식론적 방법과 절차를 한국 고전 독서론에 제공했다는 점이다. 이 점은 퇴계와 형암의 독서론에서 확인되었다. 다른 하나는 창조적 변용의 면에서 주자의 신의론이 새로운 신의론의 꽃을 피우 데 토대 역할을 했다는 점이다. 이 점은 다산의 독서론에서 확인되었다. 그러므로 한국 고전 독서론 전개에서 주자의 신의론은 긍정적 영향의 면에서 그 의의가 인정된다.

영어초록

This thesis is to analyze the inquiring method for Shin-ui, and to the contents of acceptance and practice of Shin-ui clarified by Juja in Reading method of Juja-eolyu(朱子語類). And also, this thesis is to discuss the effect of the Shin-ui theory of Juja on the history of Korean classical reading theory, based on the contents analyzed. The results are as follows.
Firstly, Juja suggested three inquiring methods for Shin-ui in explaining the course of pursuit for Dori(道理), which are the inquiring method for Shin-ui through a careful perusal, through discussion, and through a lecturing explanation. Among the three methods, the first method itself shows an independent completeness, but the others do not. In this respect, it is possible to say that in the inquiring activity for Shin-ui for the identification of Dori, the inquiring activity for Shin-ui through a careful perusal should be followed first under any circumstances. And the inquiring activity for Shin-ui under the premise of the inquiring activity of Shin-ui through a careful perusal is possible in any cases.
Secondly, Juja mentioned that, though the inquiring activity for Shin-ui is mainly for finding Dori, the activity is also a premise for the acceptance of Dori. He sorted the Dori found through the inquiring activity into two things: Hwaehwal Dori(會活 道理) which moves lively and Bulhwal Dori(不活 道理) which does not move lively. He also suggested that the Bulhwal Dori(不活 道理) found should be Hwaehwal Dori(會活 道理) in order that the Dori found may be accepted into the heart of reader. As he said that the inquiring activity for Shin-ui was in itself not only the course of finding Dori, but also an activity of making the Bulhwal Dori(不活 道理) as the Hwaehwal Dori(會活 道理), it is possible to say that the inquiring activity for Shin-ui becomes a premise for the acceptance of Dori.
Thirdly, Juja mentioned that the inquiring activity for Shin-ui had a significance for the acceptance and practice of Dori, as the Dori was found by the inquiring activity for Shin-ui. Without the finding of Dori through the inquiring activity for Shin-ui, the internalization of Dori is not possible, and also the practice of Dori can not be performed. Additionally, the finding of Dori can not be accomplished without the inquiring activity for Shin-ui. It means that the inquiring activity for Shin-ui can be a cognitive foundation to accomplish the Juja's goal of reading.
The historical significance of the Shin-ui theory in Korean classical reading theory is classified into two things. One is that Juja's Shin-ui theory provided a cognitive method and procedure for the finding of Dori for Korean classical reading theory, which can be identified in the reading theory of Toegye and Hyungam. The other is that the Shin-ui theory played a role of foundation for the blossom of new shin-ui theory, which can be identified in the reading theory of Dasan.
