朝鮮性理學에서 理氣一元論의 특성과 전개 (Characteristics and Development of ‘the the monism of Li Qi(理氣一元論)’ in Joseon Dynasty’s Neo-Confucianism)

초록

필자는 이 연구에서 조선성리학을 연구함에 주리(主理)·주기(主氣)라는 단순한 이분법적 시각을 지양하고, 리기일원론(理氣一元論)이 성리학의 본체론(本體論)·격물론(格物論. 認識論)·심성론(心性論) 등에서 중심이론이 되어야 하는 까닭을 설명하고자 한다.
제2장에서 나흠순(羅欽順. 1465~1547)과 이항(李恒, 1499~1576)의 리기일원론의 주요 내용과 장단점을 살펴보았다. 여기서 이항의 리기일물설은 기(氣)를 통하여 리(理)를 인식한다는 점에서는 나흠순과 비슷하지만, 구체적 사물에서 리와 기는 혼연히 합하여 하나로 된다고는 보지 않고, 분명하게 리는 리의 원리로, 기는 기의 원리로 존재한다고 본 점에서는 나흠순과 다르다는 것을 확인하였다.
제3장에서는 율곡(栗谷) 이이(李珥, 1536~1584)의 리기론의 핵심적 내용을 개략적으로 살펴보았다. 이 과정에서 이이와 다른 이론과의 비교 분석적인 관점을 배제하였다. 특히 이이의 리일분수론, 리통기국론, 그리고 리기지묘와 같은 이론은 성리학사의 전반적 과정에서 한 획을 그을 만큼 많은 발전적 요소가 있음을 논증하였다.
제4장에서는 녹문(鹿門) 임성주(任聖周, 1711~1788)의 리기론을 리기일원론의 관점으로 요약 정리하였다. 여기서 임성주의 리기동실(理氣同實)의 리기론과 리·기의 개념을 자세하게 분석하였다. 특히 ‘리와 기는 동시동소(同時同所)로 존재한다’, ‘리일분수와 기일분수의 명제가 동시에 가능하다’라는 이론은 성리학사의 새로운 장을 연 획기적 이론임을 논증하였다.
따라서 이항(李恒) – 이이(李珥) – 임성주(任聖周)로 이어지는 리기일원론은 변증법적 발전의 귀결점(歸結點)이라고 생각된다.
이상의 논의를 통하여 필자는 성리학의 리기론을 이제는 새로운 관점으로 재해석해야 할 필요성을 확인하였으며, 이러한 노력이 그동안 주리·주기라는 치우친 관점으로 진행되어 오는 조선성리학 연구의 방법을 바로잡고 사실적이고 객관적으로 새롭게 연구하는 전환점이 되리라고 생각된다.

영어초록

In this study, I avoid the simple dichotomous view of ‘Qi(氣, the vital force)-centered theory(主氣論)’ and ‘Li(理, the principle)-centered theory(主理論)’ in studying Joseon Neo-Confucianism, and I would like to explain why ‘the monism of Li Qi(理氣一元論)’ should be a key theory in the Cosmology, the theory of studying phenomena of nature(Epistemology), and the theory of mind and nature of Neo-Confucianism.
In Chapter 2, I looked at the main contents and the Strengths and weaknesses of Luo Qin-shun(羅欽順. 1465~1547) and Yi Hang(李恒, 1499~1576)’s ‘the monism of Li Qi’. Here, Lee hang's ‘the monism of Li Qi’ is similar to Luo Qinshun in that it recognizes Li through Qi, but it was confirmed that it is different from Luo Qinshun in that Li exists as Li's principle and Qi as the principle of Qi.
In chapter 3, outlined the core contents of ‘the LiQi theory’ of Yi I(李珥, 1536-1584). In this process, a comparative analysis perspective with Yi I and other theories was excluded. In particular, theories such as Yi I’s ‘theory of the one principle(Li) and its diversity of manifestations(理一分殊)’, ‘the theory of all penetrating Li and defining Qi(理通氣局論)’, and the ‘Wonder of Regulating Qi(理氣之妙)’ that there are many developmental elements that make a mark in the overall process of Neo-Confucianism.
In chapter 4, summarizes the overall ‘Li Qi theory’ of Im Seong-ju(任聖周, 1711-1788) from the perspective of ‘the monism of Li Qi’. Here, Im Seong-ju's ‘Li Qi theory’ of ‘Li(Principle) and Qi(vital force) working equally in real(理氣同實)‘ and the concept of Li Qi were analyzed in detail. In particular, the theories ‘Li and Qi exist at the same time and place’, ‘theory of the one principle(Li) and its diversity of manifestations(理一分殊) and the unity of Qi and its diversity of manifestations(氣一分殊)’ is possible at the same time’ argued that they were groundbreaking theories that opened a new chapter in the history of Neo-Confucianism.
Therefore, ‘the monism of Li Qi’, which leads to Yi Hang - Yi I - Im Seong-ju, is considered to be the consequential point of dialectical development.
Through the above discussion, I have confirmed the need to reinterpret the Li Qi theory of Neo-Confucianism from a new perspective, and I think this effort will be a turning point in correcting the method of Chosun Neo-Confucianism research, which has been progressing from a biased perspective of ‘Qi-centered theory’ and ‘Li-centered theory’, and will be a turning point for new research realistically and objectively.
