초록

본 연구는 최명길과 박세당의 중용관이 주화론이라는 구체적 현실에 어떤 영향을미쳤는지 알아보는 것이다. 「중용관견(中庸管見)」과 중용 사변록(中庸 思辨錄)을통해 그들의 중용관을 고찰하고, 그것이 주화론과 어떤 관계가 있는지 살펴보았다.
「중용관견」을 통해 살펴본 최명길의 중용관은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 악에 빠지기 쉬운 마음을 시서예악(詩書禮樂)으로 수양해야 한다고 하여 내적 수양을 강조하였다.
둘째, 효제충신 등 일상에서 선을 행하는 것이 중용이라고 하여 실천을 중시하였다.
셋째, 상황에 맞는 덕목의 실천 방법으로 시중(時中)을 말하였다. 넷째, 성(誠)을 통해 도를 실천해 나가면 천도에 이를 수 있다고 하여, 실천하는 과정과 끝까지 견지해야 함을 강조하였다.
중용 사변록을 통해 살펴본 박세당의 중용관은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 천리를 받은마음 때문에 사물의 마땅함을 분별할 수 있다고 하여 주체적인 마음의 판단을 중시하였다. 둘째, 시중(時中)을 중요하게 여겨 상황에 맞는 판단과 실천을 강조하였다.
셋째, 낮고 천근한 것부터 고원한 것으로 실천해 나가면 천지의 화육에 짝할 수 있다고 하여 쉬운 일부터 실천해야 함을 말하였다. 넷째, 중을 얻는 일도 중요하지만 유지하는 것[庸]이 더 중요하다고 하였다.
최명길과 박세당의 중용관에는 공통점이 발견되며, 이것은 그들이 화친(和親)을주장한 것과 관계가 있다. 그들은 주체적인 마음과 내적인 수양을 강조하였는데, 이 마음은 수없이 변화하는 환경에서 상황에 맞게 반응하면서 사태의 변화에 능동적으로 대처할 수 있는 마음이다. 또한 일을 결정하고 실행함에 상황에 따른 시중을 강조하였다. 이들은 당시 조선이 처한 상황을 종묘사직과 백성의 입장으로 생각하였고, 화친이 시중이라고 판단하였다. 시시각각 변하는 환경 속에서는 시중이 중요하다.
국가는 변화하는 환경에서 무엇이 최선인지 빨리 파악하고, 새로운 판단 준거를 세워 가장 타당한 결정을 해야 한다. 최명길은 나라의 위기 상황에서 주체성을 발휘하여 나라를 보존하였으며, 박세당은 최명길의 주화론에 적극적으로 찬성하였다. 또이들의 중용관에서는 실천을 중시하여 끝까지 견지해 나갈 것을 강조하는 공통점이발견된다. 이들은 당시의 상황에서 주화가 옳다고 판단하였고, 그 결정에 따라 어떠한 어려움에도 자신의 주장을 굽히지 않았다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to examine how Choi Myeong-gil and Park Se-dang's view of moderation had an effect on the advocacy of peace, which is a concrete real situation.
We examined their views of moderation through the review of the Jungyongkwangyeon (中庸 管見) and the Jungyongsabyeonrok (中庸思辨錄), and how they influenced the advocacy of peace.
Choi Myung-gil's view of moderation through Jungyongkwangyeon is as follows. First, the inner discipline was emphasized as it was necessary to cultivate the mind that is prone to evil through the Book of Odes, Classic of History, Etiquette, Music philosophy. Second, practice was emphasized, saying that practicing virtue in everyday life, such as filial piety and brotherly love together with loyality and sincerity, is important. Third, he spoke of Timely Mean (時中) as a way of practicing virtue appropriate to the situation. Fourth, it was said that if we practice the Tao through Sincerity(誠), we can reach the way of heaven, emphasizing the process of practicing it and the need to practice it to the end.
The view of Park Se-dang's moderation in the Jungyongsabyeonrok is as follows. First, the subjective judgment of the mind was emphasized, saying that it is possible to distinguish the properness of things because of the mind that has received the law of nature. Second, he said that Timely Mean (時中) is important and that it should be selected and practiced according to the situation. Third, he emphasized the need to practice the easy things first, saying that if you practice from the low and humble to the high, you can match the incarnation of heaven and earth. Fourth, he said that gaining moderation is important, but maintaining (庸) is more important.
A common point is found between Choi Myeong-gil and Park Se-dang's view of moderation, and this has to do with their insistence on friendly relations (和親). They emphasized the subjective mind and inner discipline, which is a mind that can actively respond to changes in circumstances while responding to situations in countless changing environments. In addition, he emphasized the importance of Timely Mean according to the situation in deciding and executing the work. They considered the situation of Joseon at that time from the viewpoint of nation and the people, and judged that the friendly relation was the Timely Mean. The Timely Mean is important in a constantly changing environment. The country must promptly identify what is best in a changing environment, establish a new criterion for judgment, and make the most appropriate judgment. Choi Myeong-gil preserved the country by showing his independence in the crisis of the country, and Park Se-dang actively supported Choi's pacifism. In addition, in their view of the moderation, practice is emphasized, and practice is emphasized to the end. They judged that the paficism was right in the circumstances of the time, and they did not give up their arguments in any difficulties according to that decision.
