비페이위(畢飛宇) 소설론 (A Study on BiFeiyu’s Novel)

초록

Since his first novel 「The Solitary island (孤島)」 in 1991, BiFeiyu (畢飛宇) has displayed sustained efforts at creating a unique literary world of his own. With these efforts, he has been able to maintain his spirit as a new generation writer, and now he is widely acknowledged for his creativity. His literary works display a series of characteristics---attention to history，making inquiries on deep human nature，pondering on culture and civilization，retaining poetic and natural style of writing，BiFeiyu has established his own individual artistic style and enjoyed broad attention of literary circles. His works are also characterized by experiments with new modes of narration and plots, and also by story lines built on detailed and sophiticated narration. These traits were not achieved overnight. At an early stage of his career, BiFeiyu explored such themes as history, philosophy, desire etc.
He searched through the mainstream literature of contemporary China such as trauma literature on the great cultural revoluion (傷痕文學), root-searching literature (尋根文學), avant-garde (先鋒文學), neo-realism (新寫實主義), and also examined the works of such big names as William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes, Luxun (魯迅) and Moyan (莫言) etc.
One of BiFeiyu‘s virtues as a writer is his steadiness and diligence, which reveal the kind of person he is. His novels are characterized by the richness of materials and the width of expression, and also by the philosophical tone in which he addresses the issues such as human nature and cruelty, a tenacious hold on life, desire and restraint, survival and existence, life and death, and fate and tragedy. The way he portrays the breath and agony of the common people and elucidates the logic of life in the spirit of tragedy and pessimism owes much to his extraordinary wisdom and insight.
