요한계시록의 네 가지 주요 해석법에 대한 해석학적 고찰 ― 존 D. 카푸토의 포스트모던 해석학을 중심으로 (An Hermeneutic Reflection on the Four Major Interpretations of Revelation — Focusing on John D. Caputo’s Postmodern Hermeneutics)

초록

오늘날 요한계시록을 해석하는 대표적인 네 가지 방법은 1세기 당시의 상황에 초점을 맞춰서 해석하는 과거주의 해석(preterism), 종말의 특수한 시점에 집중하여 해석하는 미래주의 해석(futurism), 역사적 시간과 무관하게 텍스트 내부의 영적 원리를 추출해서 이해하고자 하는 이상주의 해석(idealism), 요한계시록 전체가 교회의 역사적 개요를 예언적으로 암시하고 있다고 생각하는 역사주의 해석(historicism)이 있다. 이들은 일차적으로 요한계시록 텍스트가 텍스트 외부의 특정 역사적 시간을 직접적으로 지시하는지를 인정하는 여부에 따라 이상주의 해석과 나머지 해석으로 분류되며, 다시 역사적 시간성의 지시 여부를 인정할 경우 그 시간대를 과거와 미래와 전체 역사 가운데 어떤 범주로 설정할 것인지에 따라서 이차적으로 분류된다.
존 D. 카푸토는 역사적 존재로서 해석자가 처한 현존재의 역사성을 고려하여(하이데거), 저자와 독자의 역사적 지평의 융합을 꿈꾸며(가다머), 텍스트에 대한 일차적 주석적 독해를 넘어 이차적 독해에서 독자의 현재와 미래로 모험을 감행하는(데리다) 비독단적이고 개방적이며 유연한 약한 신학으로서의 신시학적(theo-poetics) 해석학을 포스트모던 해석학으로 제안하였다. 그는 헤겔이 칸트와는 다르게 기독교의 초자연적 신비를 승인하였지만, 여전히 명제적 지식과 개념을 고집하였다고 비판하고, 헤겔의 이단적 버전으로 ‘변종적 포스트모던 헤겔주의’(variant postmodern Hegelianism) 또는 ‘혼종적 기관 없는 헤겔주의’(hybrid headless Hegelian ism)가 사건의 신학(theology of the event)으로서 신시학적 해석학에 적합하다고 보았다. 본고는 이를 요한계시록 해석법에 적용하여, 모든 시대의 독자가 각각의 동시대적 의미를 언제든지 창조해 내는 개방적이고 비판적인 ‘변종적 포스트모던 역사주의’(variant postmodern historicism) 혹은 ‘혼종적 기관 없는 역사주의’(hybrid headless historicism) 해석법을 제안하였고, 이를 통해 ‘추상-기계’(machine abstraite)로서 요한계시록 텍스트가 언제든지 각 시대와 지역의 제국주의적 상황에 대항적으로 읽혀질 수 있다고 주장한다.

영어초록

There are four main ways of interpreting the book of Revelation today: preterism, which focuses on the context of the first century; futurism, which focuses on a particular point in time in the apocalypse; idealism, which seeks to extract and understand the spiritual principles within the text independent of historical time; and historicism, which considers the entire book of Revelation to be prophetically alluding to the historical outline of the church. These interpretations are categorized into idealism and others based primarily on whether or not the text of Revelation directly indicates historical temporality outside of the text, and secondarily on whether or not, if one accepts the indication of historical temporality, one places that temporality in the past, future, or overall history.
John D. Caputo has proposed a postmodern hermeneutic of theo-poetics as a weak theology that starts from the ontological structure of the interpreter as a historical being (Heidegger), dreams of a fusion of the historical horizons of author and reader (Gadamer), but ventures beyond the primary exegetical reading of the text into the reader’s present and future in a secondary reading (Derrida), and is non-dogmatic, open and flexible. He critically asserts that Hegel, unlike Kant, approved of the supernatural mysteries of Christianity, but still insisted on propositional knowledge and concepts, and proposes ‘variant postmodern Hegelianism’ or ‘hybrid headless Hegelianism’, as a theology of the event that is suitable for theo-poetical hermeneutics. Applying this to the hermeneutic of Revelation, this article suggests an open and critical ‘variant postmodern historicism’ or ‘hybrid headless historicism’ hermeneutic that allows readers of all times to create their own contemporary meanings at any given time, so that the text of Revelation as a ‘machine abstrite’ can be read against the imperialist context of each time and place.
