초록

아우구스티누스(Augustinus)는 그리스도교 신학을 정립한 인물로 평가받는다. 100권이 넘는 그의 저술 중에서 가장 많이 읽힌 『고백록』(Confessions)은 인간의 종교성이 심리학적 관점에서 풍부하게 해석될 수 있다는 사실을 보여준 텍스트이다. 본고는 인간의 마음과 종교성의 관계를 파악하는 ‘환원적’, ‘적응적’, ‘변형적’ 관점에서 『고백록』을 해석한다. 환원적 접근은 아우구스티누스와 부모의 상호 관계라는 측면과 그의 ‘성’(sexuality) 관념이 형성된 대목을 잘 조망하게 만든다. 적응적 접근은 ‘종교의 기능’은 물론, 대상관계이론에 기반해 어머니 모니카(Monica)와의 관계에 주목하도록 돕는다. 변형적 관점은 인간의 ‘종교적 열망’과 회심을 포함한 비일상적인 ‘종교 체험’으로 확인되는 형이상학적 차원의 직관적인 앎에 초점을 맞춘다.
『고백록』의 종교심리학적 해석은 여러 가지 통찰을 제시한다. 첫째, 이 책은 인간 종교성이 ‘마음’을 통로로 삼아 다양하게 구현될 수 있음을 보여준다. 둘째, 아우구스티누스의 저술은 종교심리학의 환원적, 적응적, 변형적 관점의 해석 가능성을 두루 포함한다. 그리고 세 가지 접근법은 인간의 종교적 열망과 종교성을 확인하는 변형적 관점을 기반으로 통합된다. 셋째, 『고백록』은 그리스도교가 당대의 철학과 종교와 상호 작용하면서 종교 전통으로서 독자성을 확보해 나가는 과정을 잘 드러낸다. 『고백록』은 전통적인 아우구스티누스 이해와는 다른 측면을 보여준다는 점에서 유용한 종교심리학적 텍스트이다. 성인으로 추앙받는 인물이라 할지라도 구체적인 삶 속에서 종교성이 발전해 나가는 과정은 통념과 달리 순탄한 것만은 아니다. 그러니 『고백록』은 우리에게 종교와 인간 의식의 관계를 더 입체적으로 바라볼 것을 요청한다. 특히 상충하거나 경합하는 것처럼 보이는 환원적/적응적/변형적 관점이 한 개인의 종교적 여정에서 두루 나타날 수 있음을 확인시켜 준다.

영어초록

Augustinus(354-430) is regarded as a central figure in establishing Christian theology. Among his extensive body of works, spanning over 100 volumes, Confessions stands out as the most widely read, illustrating how human religiosity can be richly interpreted through a psychological lens. This paper examines Confessions through three perspectives -reductive, adaptive, and transformational- to better understand the relationship between the human mind and religiosity. The reductive approach sheds light on Augustine’s conceptions of ‘sexuality’ and his interactions with his parents, while the adaptive approach focuses on the ‘function of religion’ particularly examining Augustine’s relationship with his mother, Monica(331-387), through the lens of object relations theory. The transformational perspective, emphasizes metaphysical knowledge, intuitively grasped through extraordinary ‘religious experiences’ and including humanity’s ‘religious yearning’ and conversion.
The psychological interpretation of religion in Confessions offers several insights. First, the work demonstrates how human religiosity can manifest in diverse ways through the ‘mind’ as a conduit. Second, Augustine’s writings encompass the interpretative possibilities of the reductive, adaptive, and transformational approaches within the psychology of religion. These three approaches ultimately converge on the transformational perspective to validate human religious aspiration and religiosity. Third, Confessions reveals the evolving process by which Christianity, through its interactions with contemporary philosophy and religion, established its distinct identity as a religious tradition. Confessions proves invaluable as a resource for the psychology of religion, as it highlights aspects of Augustine beyond those typically addressed in traditional theological interpretations. The process of religious development within the context of one’s concrete life, even for a figure revered as a saint, is often far from straightforward. Confessions, therefore, invites us to view the relationship between religion and human consciousness in a more nuanced way. Specifically, it suggests that perspectives that may appear conflicting -reductive, adaptive, and transformational- can all be present within an individual’s religious journey.
