기록의 역사에서 집단 경험의 역사로- 역사 드라마 <징비록>의 선조와 류성룡 캐릭터 분석을 중심으로 - (From the Historical Record to the Collective Experience of History: Focused on Analysis of the Characters of Seonjo and Seongryong Ryu from Historical Drama)

초록

본 논문에서는 역사 드라마를 통한 인물 및 역사 경험 대한 대중들의 집단 기억화의 문제에 대해 고찰하고자 하는 의도에서 서애 류성룡의 『징비록』을 바탕으로 제작된, 역사 대하 드라마 <징비록: 임진왜란, 피로 쓴 교훈>을 대상으로 주인공인 류성룡과 선조 캐릭터에 대한 대중들의 담론이 역사적 인물에 대한 집단 기억화 과정에 어떻게 영향을 끼치고 있는지 살펴보았다. 역사 드라마 <징비록>은 2015년 2월부터 8월까지 50부작으로 방영된 KBS 대하드라마로, 대부분의 사건이 『징비록』에 서술된 내용에 따라 구성되었다. <징비록>에서 선조 캐릭터는 붕당정치를 조장하고 실제적인 백성의 삶을 돌아보지 못했으며 성군에 대한 환상에 기대어 선심으로써 민심을 얻어 국왕으로서의 자존감을 높이고자 하였으나 정작 국가의 위기 시에는 일신의 안위를 위해 백성과 종묘사직을 버리는 인물로 부각되었다. 임진왜란 직후 선조에 대한 여론은 그의 파천과 분조의 단행으로 나라를 버리고 망하게 한 왕이었으나 인조 이후 임진왜란을 극복하고 조선을 구한 임금, 학문에 조예가 깊고 국가 중흥의 업적을 이룬 왕으로 현창되었다. 그러나 드라마 <징비록>을 시청한 대중들은 붕당정치를 조장하고 백성을 버린 왕으로 재현된 선조 캐릭터를 내가 아는 실제 인물 선조 그대로라고 평가하였다. 반면 이상적인 신념과 태도를 견지하며 고군분투하는 류성룡 캐릭터는 실제 인물 류성룡이 아니라고 하였다. 드라마 <징비록> 시청자들은 역사 기록에 대해 살피고 다른 사람들과 의견을 공유하면서 선조 캐릭터를 통해 실재한 선조를 이끌어 내어 역사 인물 선조에 대한 기억을 재구성하였다. 모리스 알박스는 실제 경험에 대한 집단 기억은 사회적인 틀을 사용하여 기억을 해체하고 새롭게 구성하는 과정을 통해 형성된다고 하였다. 드라마 <징비록>의 선조 캐릭터를 통해 선조에 대한 경험과 기억을 재구성하고 있는 시청자들의 반응은 집단 기억의 재구성이 실제 경험이 아닌 매체를 통한 경험을 통해서도 이루어질 수 있음을 시사한 것이라고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

This article is intended to investigate collective memory about people or historical experience through historical drama by looking into how the discourse about the main characters of Seonjo(宣祖, 1552~1608) and Seongryong Ryu(柳成龍, 1542~1607) from the historical drama <The Jingbirok: A Memoir of Imjin War> producted based on 『Jingbirok(懲毖錄)』 by Seongryong Ryu, has the impact on a collective reminding process. The historical drama <Jingbirok>, that was broadcasted fifty episodes in KBS starting from February to August, 2015, is structured most of its stories based on descriptions in 『Jingbirok』. In <Jingbirok>, Seonjo character is emphasized as a person who encourages factional politics, has lack of interest on real citizen life, and tries to heighten self-respect as a king by winning the confidence of people through kindness leaning on the fantasy of a sage king, but throws away his people and the royal ancestral shrine and the altars for the gods of land and crops(宗廟 and 社稷) for his safety at the national crisis. Although the public opinion on King Seonjo right after Imjin War(Japanese Invasion; 壬辰倭亂, 1592) was a king who abandoned and ruined the country by the execution of royal refuge(播遷) and dividing royal court(分朝), he was praised as a king who saved Chosun(朝鮮) and overcame Imjin War, and achieved the restoration and had profound knowledge of studies after King Injo(仁祖) period. However, the public who watched the drama <Jingbirok> equalized the Seonjo character with King Seonjo of Chosun that promoted factional politics, and abandoned the citizen at the national crisis. On the other hand, they did not identify Seongryong Ryu of historical person with the character Seongryong Ryu who has struggled against national destruction and tribulation in war with ideal faith and an inflexible attitude in the drama. The viewers of the drama reconstruct the memory of historical person King Seonjo through the media experience leaded from Seonjo character as they share their opinions with others and read historical records. Maurice Halbwachs claimed that the collective memories of actual experience are formed through the process of dismantling existing memories and reorganizing the memories using a social framework. The reaction of viewers reconstructing experiences and memories of King Seonjo through the drama character Seonjo implies the possibility that the reconstruction of collective memory happens not only with the real experiences, but also with the experiences from media.
