예천군 집강소에 나타난 집단 무의식 고찰 - 『예천군척사록』을 중심으로 - (A Consideration on the Collective Unconscious in Yecheongun Jipgangso : Focused on Yecheongun Cheoksarok)

초록

본 연구는 『예천군척사록』에 나타난 ‘집단 무의식’에 관한 고찰이다. 이 책은 갑오년 예천군 소속이었던 군인(郡人) 반재원(潘在元)이 쓴 일기이다. 그런데도 성상 30년 계사(癸巳)로부터 시작한 자신의 일기에 집강소라는 명칭을 부여함으로써 한 개인의 기록이 아닌 집강소라는 집단의 기록이라는 의미를 부여받게 된다. 따라서 『예천군척사록』에 나타난 모든 서술에 대한 분석은 철저히 집단성에서 접근할 필요가 있다.
갑오년 예천군의 봄은 대대적으로 동학농민군이 봉기한 호남과는 달리 평온했지만, 동도들의 분탕질로 경각심을 갖게 되는 사건들이 발생하면서 부내의 아전과 백성들의 요청으로 동학농민군의 침탈을 막고자 집강소를 설치하게 된다. 이때 ‘왕을 수호하고 순국’한다는 뜻으로 보수라는 말을 사용하면서 진보적 성향을 띤 호남 동학농민군의 집강소와 보수적 성향을 띤 예천군 집강소가 정면으로 충돌하는 지점을 형성한다.
보수적 견해를 지녔던 예천군의 집강소는 힘을 합쳐 척왜하자는 동학농민군의 제안을 거절하고 끝내 일본군과 협력하여 예천읍에서 벌어진 전투를 대승으로 이끌게 된다. 물론 53명의 일본군 도움 없이 전투를 승리로 이끌었지만, 만약 그렇지 않았다면 동학농민군 섬멸에 일본군을 앞세웠을 것이 분명하다. 예천군 집강소가 조선 사람이 조선 사람을 탄압하는데 일본군을 앞세울 수 있었던 것은 조선왕조에 대한 원형 이미지(archetypal image) 때문이다.
조선왕조에 대한 예천군 집강소의 이미지는 ‘칼 융의 집단 무의식’에 따른 ‘생리학적 추동이며 감각으로 지각된 상징성에서 비롯된 원형’으로 자아의 이미지와 혼동하여 동일시하는 경향이 있다. 이럴 때 자신이 엄청난 권력을 가진 존재라고 착각하는 사태가 발생하는데, 예천군 집강소가 조선왕조를 지킬 영웅이 자신들이라는 망상·착각·왜곡함으로써 일본군을 앞세워 동학농민군을 섬멸하는 데 주저함이 없었다고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

This study is a consideration on the ‘Collective Unconscious’ shown in Yecheongun Cheoksarok(醴泉郡斥邪錄). This book is a diary written by Ban Jae-won(潘在元), a local government officer who belonged to Yecheongun County in the Gabo(甲午) year. Nevertheless, he gave the name Jipgangso(執綱所) to his diary, which he started from Gyesa(癸巳) in the 30th year of king’s reign, giving it the meaning that it was not a record of an individual but a record of a group called Jipgangso. Thus, the analysis of all descriptions in Yecheongun Cheoksarok needs to be approached thoroughly from a collective perspective.
The situation in the spring of Yecheongun County in 1894 was peaceful, unlike the Honam region where the Donghak Peasant Army revolted on a large scale, but as incidents occurred that raised awareness due to the uprisings of the Donghak bands , a Jipgangso was established to prevent the invasion of the Donghak Peasant Army at the request of the official aide and the people within the county. At this point, the word conservative was used to mean ‘protecting the king and sacrificing one’s country,’ forming a point of head-on conflict between progressive Donghak Peasant Army in Honam and the conservative Yecheongun County.
Jipgangso in Yecheongun County, who held conservative views, rejected the Donghak Peasant Army’s proposal to join forces and invade Japan, and eventually cooperated with the Japanese army and led the Battle of Yecheoeup County to a major victory. Of course, the battle was won without the help of 53 Japanese soldiers, but if not, it is clear that the Japanese army would have taken the lead in annihilating the Donghak Peasant Army. The reason why the Yecheongun Jipgangso was able to put the Japanese army first in oppressing the Joseon people was because of the archetypal image of the Joseon Dynasty.
The image of the Yecheongun Jipgangso for the Joseon Dynasty tends to be confused with the image of the self as a ‘physiological drive and an archetype derived from symbolism perceived through the senses’ according to the ‘Carl Jung’s collective unconsciousness.’ In this case, there is a situation arises in which people mistakenly believe that they are beings with enormous power, and it can be said that Yecheongun Jipgangso had no hesitation in annihilating the Donghak Peasant Army with the Japanese army by delusion, illusion, and distortion that they were the heroes who would protect the Joseon Dynasty.
