초록

The purpose of this study is to reveal the meaning of the epic symbol of presentation by comparing and analyzing Choi Bu’s Pyo Hae Rok and Hamel’s Hamel Drift Period based on the epic elements. Comparative consideration in the epistemological aspects of Pyo Hae Rok and Hamel Drift Period has its own significance. First, it can serve as an opportunity to come up with a research methodology for classical essays. Second, by comparing and analyzing classic travel and report, we can reveal the characteristics of classical essay genre. First of all, the two works show different sides in terms of first-person narration and expression of individual consciousness. Pyo Hae Rok reveals a sense of individuality by omitting the subject or by enhancing the credibility of the narrative through the first-person expression of “sin-ha”. On the other hand, Hamel Drift Period enhances the credibility of the narrative by reconstructing a faint memory narrative through multiple subjects and action-oriented descriptions called “we”. Next, the internalization aspects of the background and character are also different. Pyo Hae Rok depicts a sense of urgency through conflicts between characters in a place of death called the sea. Hamel Drift Period depicts the will of a person through the portrayal of a group of people who attempt to escape from a place of oppression called land. Finally, in terms of subject matter, it can be found that both works mean the symbolism of “the drift” through characters. However, the drifting narrative of Pyo Hae Rok focuses on identifying human beings. The story of the drift in Hamel Drift Period focuses on explaining the value of life through the pursuit of human freedom. It is necessary to identify the characteristics of the classical essay genre through the style characteristics of these two works in the future.
