<임진록> 역사계열과 역사계열(변)의 초월성 연구 (A Study on Transcendence in ’s historical series and historical series (variations))

초록

이 논문은 역사소설 <임진록> 중 역사계열과 역사계열(변)에 해당하는 작품들을 대상으로 초월성의 기능과 의미를 考究한 것이다.
문학작품에서 환상성과 초월성을 대상으로 한 연구는 90년대 이후 상당히 진척되었으나 역사소설만은 장르의 속성 때문에 의도적으로 제외되어 왔다. 그러나 필자의 연구 결과 역사소설은 ‘역사’가 아닌 ‘소설’이 중심이므로 미메시스와 더불어 환상성이 결부되어 있다. 특히 역사소설에서 환상성을 유발하는 초월성은 우리 고소설에서 빈번히 표출되어 더 이상 역사적 사건을 다룬다는 이유로 환상성과 초월성을 기반으로 분석하는 것을 꺼릴 필요는 없다고 본다.
기존의 연구에서는 환상성과 초월성이라는 용어가 연구자들에 의해 개별적 의미로 사용되어 혼란을 불러왔다. 이를 방지하기 위해 본고에서는 두 용어들을 변별적으로 사용하고자 노력하였다. 우선 초월성은 현실계를 넘어선 공간, 흔히 異界로 지칭되는 공간에 속한 존재들로 인해 발생하는 성격으로 규정하고, 이러한 초월성이 현실계에 발현될 때 서술자, 인물, (내포)독자들이 느끼는 인식의 성격을 환상성으로 보았다. 이는 기존의 서양에서 출발한 환상성에 대한 규정을 기반으로 하지만 동양적 상황을 고려하여 차이성을 둔 것이다. 이렇게 본다면 초월성은 공간과 존재의 개념으로, 환상성은 심리적으로 발생하는 인식의 문제로 분화되어 작품을 분석할 때 구분하여 사용할 수 있게 된다.
<임진록>은 이본의 수가 매우 많아 60종에 이른다. 게다가 작품의 내용 및 성격이 판이한 경우가 다수여서 이를 같은 작품으로 보기 위해서는 기준이 필요하다. 본고에서는 <임진록> 이본군 전체에 나타나는 성격이 초월성인 점에 착안하여 연구를 진행하였다.
본고는 <임진록> 중에서도 초월적 성격이 약하고 역사적 성격이 강해 연구자들에 의해 역사소설로 인정받은 이본들을 선별하였는데, 역사계열과 역사계열(변)이 바로 이에 해당된다. 검토 결과 역사계열은 천문과 이변, 신이한 존재의 도움이라는 초월성이 주로 표출되었고, 역사계열(변)은 그에 더해 영웅성의 표출과 관련된 초월성이 추가되었다.
이렇게 역사소설에서도 초월성은 서사의 진행에 필수 불가결한 요소로 작용되는데, 그렇다고 해서 초월성이 역사성 자체를 무화시키지는 않는다. 초월성은 서사에 개입하여 인물들을 도와 통쾌한 승리를 이끌어내지만 어디까지나 임진왜란 전체의 사건 내에서 작용할 뿐이다. 이처럼 초월성은 허구를 통해 서사를 한계까지 밀어붙여 현실을 심문하고 전복시키지만 역설적으로 현실을 완전히 전복하지는 못한다. 이것이 역사소설의 성격을 무화시키지 않는 서사적 한계지점이기 때문이다.
요컨대 <임진록>은 초월성이라는 소설적 상상력을 통해 위로와 위안을 추구하면서 동시에 역사소설에서 상상력의 한계점을 보여주었다는 데서도 의의가 있는 작품이다.

영어초록

This study considers the function and meaning of transcendence in the works corresponding to historical series and historical series (variations) in the different variations of the historical novel Imjinrok.
Research that deals with fantasy and transcendence in literary works has been actively conducted since the 1990s, but historical novels have been excluded due to certain characteristics of the genre. However, according to our analysis, historical novels are more “novel” than “history,” and thus relate to both mimesis and fantasy. Besides, we can find a similar type of transcendence, in the form of fantasy, in both historical and classic novels. Thus, given their depiction of actual historic events, we should no longer be reluctant to analyze the ways in which historical novels transcend the reality of their subject matter and make use of supernatural embellishments.
In advanced research, the terms fantasy and transcendence have often caused confusion, as researchers have used them arbitrarily. To avoid this confusion, we attempt to use them discriminately. First of all, transcendence can be defined as something produced by beings from a space often referred to as another world beyond this one. On the other hand, fantasy is seen as the awareness thatthe narrator, characters, and (implied) readers have when such transcendence is manifested in the real world.This is based on the Western definition of fantasy, but is quite different from its consideration in the East. In this sense, transcendence isthe concept of space and existence, while fantasy is divided into the matter of recognition that occurs psychologically; thus, they can be used discriminately in analyzing works.
There are as many as 60 different versions of Imjinrok, many of which differ greatly in terms of content and character. Thus, we must establish the criteria by which they can be seen as the same work. This study proceeds by observing that all editions of Imjinrok share the element of transcendence.
Among the different editions of Imjinrok, this study looks at those that researchers have recognized as historical novels, since they display more historical elements than fictitious ones, understood as both historical series and historical series (variations). According to this analysis, historical series express transcendence mainly in the form of astronomical and extraordinary events or superhuman beings, while historical series (variations) add transcendence related with the expression of heroism.
In such a manner, transcendence is an essential factor for developing the narratives of historical novels. However, this does not mean that transcendence overrules historicity. Although it intervenes within the narration and leads to a thrilling victory for the protagonists, it is confined to the Imjinwaeran (Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592). This means that transcendence pushes the narration into fiction, interrogating and overturning reality, but paradoxically does not completely overturn reality. This is the limit at which the novels can remain historical.
In fact, Imjinrokis meaningful in that it pursues comfort and consolation through the fictitious imagination of transcendence, and at the same time exhibits the limitation of the imagination in historical novels.
