메타버스 시대의 라이프로깅: 기술적 과제와 사회적 이슈 (Lifelogging in the Age of Metaverse: Technical Challenges and Social Issues)

초록

(연구배경 및 목적) 디지털 기술의 발전과 인터넷의 광범위한 사용으로 인해 2021년 현재 메타버스 시대의 초입에 진입한 것으로 여겨진다. 개인의 활동과 경험을 기록하는 라이프로깅은 메타버스의 핵심요소로서, 본격적인 메타버스 시대에는 현실세계와 가상세계에서의 모든 주요 활동이 통합적인 데이터베이스에 기록되는 퍼베이시브 라이프로깅의 단계로 진입할 것으로 예측된다. 본 연구에서는 퍼베이시브 라이프로깅의 특성, 이를 위해 필요한 기술적 진보, 그리고 향후 예상되는 사회적 이슈에 대해 고찰해보고자 한다. (연구방법) 메타버스와 라이프로깅의 특성과 전망에 관해서는 기존에 발표된 연구 내용과 SNS 플랫폼을 조사하였다. 더불어 현실세계의 라이프로깅 현황 사례로 '애플와치', 그리고 가상세계 라이프로깅 현황 사례로 온라인 플랫폼인 '동물의 숲' 사례를 살펴보았다. (결과) 현재 현실세계의 라이프로깅은 가상세계의 라이프로깅에 비해 내용이 제한적이다. 퍼베이시브 라이프로깅을 위해서는 현실세계의 개인의 경험 전체에 대한 통합적 디지털 기록을 포착하고 저장해야 하는데, 이를 위해 멀티모달 디지털 센서 기술, 그리고 의미 있는 기록을 선별하고 추출하는 데이터 필터링 및 데이터 마이닝 기술의 발전이 요구된다. 또한 이렇게 획득된 현실세계의 디지털 기록과 가상세계의 디지털 기록을 동기화하고 통합적으로 저장 관리하는 플랫폼 개발이 필요하다. 한편 이러한 기술적 문제와는 별도로 통합된 현실-가상세계에서 복수의 아바타들 사이의 상호작용을 어떻게 조율할 것인가가 쟁점이 될 것으로 예상된다. 더불어 권력의 개인 통제와 관련해 기존의 '생명관리정치'가 논의의 중심에서 멀어지고, 대신 거대 메타버스 플랫폼 기업이 개인의 행위를 관리하는 '행위관리정치'가 논의의 중심에 설 것으로 예측된다. (결론) 미래에는 현실세계와 가상세계가 통합된 메타버스 세상에서 우리의 모든 활동이 자동으로 기록되는 퍼베이시브 라이프로깅 시대가 도래할 것으로 예측되며, 이는 현재의 메타버스가 최종적 단계의 메타버스로 발전하기 위해 필수적인 요소일 것이다. 그러나 퍼베이시브 라이프로깅이 확산됨에 따라 복수의 아바타 사이의 관계 정립, 개인의 행위통제 문제와 같은 쟁점들이 등장할 것이다. 따라서 향후 멀티모달 센서, 데이터 마이닝과 같이 라이프로깅을 용이하게 해주는 기술의 개발과 더불어 이러한 쟁점들을 어떤 방향으로 해결해 나갈 것인가에 대한 논의가 필요해 보인다.

영어초록

(Background and Purpose) As of 2021, we are stepping into an age of the metaverse owing to advances in digital technologies and the widespread use of the Internet. Lifelogging―keeping track of one’s activities and experiences―is an essential component of the metaverse. “Pervasive lifelogging,” which refers to the process of recording all major aspects of our experiences in the real and virtual worlds in a unified framework, is expected to be prevalent in the metaverse age. This research deals with the characteristics of pervasive lifelogging, the technological advances required to realize it, and the potential social issues associated with it. (Method) The viewpoint and framework of metaverse and lifelogging were derived from existing literature and SNS platforms. We also examined the device “Apple Watch” as a sample of lifelogging in the real world, and the online game “Animal Crossing” as a sample of lifelogging in the virtual world. (Results) Currently, lifelogging in the real world is quite limited compared with that in the virtual world. For pervasive lifelogging to be possible, the totality of one’s experiences not only in the virtual world but also in the real world must be captured and stored in a digital format. This requires advances in the technologies associated with multimodal digital sensors, data filtering, and data mining. In addition, a unified platform that synchronizes and integrates digital data collected from the real and virtual world must be developed. In addition to these technological issues, pervasive lifelogging is expected to cause various social issues. Multiple avatars may not be independent, and may influence each other via one’s activities and experiences in the real world in the age of pervasive lifelogging. Therefore, coordinating the interactions among multiple avatars that embody multiple personas may become important. Moreover, with respect to the issue of controlling and manipulating individuals by authority, “behavior-politics” exercised by giant multinational enterprises may take the place of “bio-politics” exercised by nations. (Conclusions) Pervasive lifelogging, which is a critical element for realizing the ultimate form of the metaverse in the future, records the totality of one’s activities and experiences in the real and virtual worlds. However, pervasive lifelogging entails issues such as coordinating relationships among multiple avatars and the abuse of power to control and manipulate individual behaviors. Thus, in addition to achieving technological advances, we need to tackle how to handle social issues associated with pervasive lifelogging in the future.
