한풀이로 본 조선후기 여성 自傳의 계층별 술회 양상 (Aspects of Reminiscence in the Autobiography of Women By Their Social Class in the Late Era of Joseon Dynasty: Based on the Viewpoint of Hanpuri (Spite Venting))

초록

조선후기에 이르면 남성은 물론이고 女性도 존재감과 정체성을 드러내는 담론의 주체가 된다. 여전히 가부장적 권위가 지배하는 사회였으나 조선후기에 다가서면서 여성들에게도 스스로를 성찰하는 자각이 싹트는 것이다. 『閑中錄』, 『苦行錄』, 『덴동어미화전가』는 신분적 층차없이 주인공 스스로가 생애에서 가장 깊게 각인된 자취를 한탄조로 털어놓고 있는 이야기들이다. 話者들이 王家, 班家, 平民여성으로서 신분은 다를지라도 지위와 상관없이 ‘나’의 정체성에 의문을 제기하는 것은 물론 ‘나’의 생을 속박, 억압하는 세계와의 갈등을 공통적으로 드러낸다는 특징이 있다. 중세시기 여성들에게 自傳은 對사회적 존재로서 활약상에 초점을 맞추는 남성들의 시각과 달리 억압하는 세계, 남성에 갇혀 형성된 원한의 실체를 밝히고 나아가 누적된 한을 풀어내는 데에서 담론의 의미를 찾고 있다.
여성 자전 찬술의 동기를 보면 자기 과시적이며 가문의 천양이라는 목적성을 앞세우는 남성들과 전혀 다른 점이 포착된다. 생의 마지막 단계에서 전하는 여성들의 술회는 신분차이에도 불구하고 피억압적 존재로 일관한 데 대한 회한이 강하게 표출되기도 되기도 한다. 그러나 삶의 표출이란 자기부정이 아니라 위무감을 얻어가는 과정으로 이해해야 할 터이다. 논의대상으로 삼은 3작품은 해원의 정도가 일치하지는 않으나 자신의 한스런 자취를 돌출시킴으로써 한풀이에 이를 수 있다는 술회적 동기는 공유하고 있는 것으로 나타난다.

영어초록

As Korean history came to the late era of Joseon Dynasty, both men and women became independent subjects of discourses in revealing their sense of presence and original identity. The contemporary people in this era still lived under the traditional rule of patriarchal authority, but the women who lived in premodern era of Korean history had more and more tendencies to reflect on their self than before. “Hanjungnok(閑中錄)”, “Gohaengnok” and “Dendong-eomi Hwajeon-ga” are representative life stories about woman protagonists who confessed—as if to regret—deepest imprinted marks on their heart in their lifetime beyond any gap of social positions. These three stories demonstrate that speakers raise questions to any identity of ‘I’ no matter which social positions they had, although they actually belonged to different social classes such as royal family, noble family and ordinary family, and there are a consistent series of conflicts with a world pressurizing and binding on their life. As long as the autobiography is concerned, medieval Korean women came to accept it as a means of discourse to exert a utility in making clear any reality of grudges formed in their heart under the control of oppressive world and masculism and thereby venting a pile of spites, which is contrary to medieval Korean men's viewpoints focused as social being upon any reputable merit.
The motivations of premodern women to write autobiographic works read in quite different ways from those of premodern men who pursued any objectivity of self-display and self-praise about family. The reminiscence that women delivers in their ending phase of life speaks strongly out any regret about their life marked consistently by a being oppressed beyond any gap of social positions. However, it is reasonable to conclude that simply revealing their life—even though it was marked by a life of bitter grudges- possibly helped them find a sort of comfort. None of the 3 life stories discussed in this study successfully reaches any full vent of grudges in life. Nevertheless, it appears that woman speakers have a strong sense of expectation about meeting potential readers even in the future enough to commit themselves to writing their own life stories.
