초록

The supernatural approach to miracles is a traditional perspective of the Church. This view is contrary to the naturalistic approach of the Rationalist perspective. Today, the problem is a combination of these two approaches. It is an approach which regards the miracle of Jesus as a divine, transcendent miracle while trying to explain it reasonably. It is also a perspective of the positive thinking or self-improvement industry, which originated in the United States.
In this article, we review the points of Barbara Ehrenreich, focusing on her book, Bright-Sided. It is an excellent critique of the positive thinking and self-improvement industry in America. Ehrenreich confronts the false promises of positive thinking. Suffering from breast cancer herself, she realized that positive thinking is not helpful in curing that disease. She explores the self-improvement and positive thinking industry, discovering its symbiotic relationship with American capitalism. And she explores how poverty, obesity, and unemployment are being marketed as obstacles that can be overcome with a positive mindset. Ehrenreich sees the dark roots of positive thinking emerging from 19th-century religious movements. Mary Baker Eddy, William James, and Norman Vincent Peale paved the path for today’s self-improvement industry and positive psychology institutes.
This positive thinking has had a major impact on the Korean church. Some churches regard it as a kind of gospel. As Ehrenreich has correctly pointed out, it is just another kind of self-improvement industry, and has nothing to do with the gospel or miracle of Jesus. In this mindset, God is no longer God; he is nothing more than a ‘supply system’ feeding the needs of human beings.
