문화-반문화 모델로 본 인도 영화 <세 얼간이>의 스토리텔링 (Storytelling of Indian film <3 Idiots> seen through culture/anti-culture model)

초록

본고는 로트만의 문화 모델 개념을 스토리텔링 분석에 적용해보고자 한다. 이를 위해 인도영화 <세 얼간이>를 오늘날 인도 사회의 문화 모델에 대한 하나의 해석으로 간주하고 스토리텔링을 분석을 시도해본다. 로트만이 제시하는 문화 모델의 가장 일반적인 속성은 문화의 공간을 두 개의 상이한 부분으로 나눠놓는 경계선의 존재이다. 이는 자신의 ‘문화’를 유일한 것으로 간주하고 여기에 포함되지 못하는 것들은 ‘비문화’로 배제시키는 관점과 연결된다.
<세 얼간이>에서는 인도 최고의 명문대학인 임페리얼공대를 중심으로 하는 엘리트층의 문화와 거기서 배제되는 비문화가 구분된다. 이와 같은 로트만의 문화 모델은 인지주의 서사학자 호건이 제시한 캐릭터 유형인 사회규범적 캐릭터와 개인주의적 캐릭터 간의 대립과도 연관지어 논의될 수 있다. 영화의 주인공인 란초는 개인주의적 캐릭터로서 비문화에서 문화로 진입한 다음 사회규범적 존재인 총장과의 대립에서 승리하는 인물이다. 란초는 다시 비문화로 밀려나거나 문화 내에서 권위를 물려받지 않고 새로운 대안 문화를 구축한다. 이는 로트만의 문화-반문화 모델로 해석될 수 있다.
란초가 구축한 새로운 문화는 기존의 규범과는 정반대의 자질들로 채워져있다. 즉 경쟁을 넘어서 평화라는 초월적 가치를 추구하고 있다. <세 얼간이>는 글로벌라이제이션과 자본주의의 결합이 만들어낸 약육강식의 성공신화에 대항하고 새로운 대안문화의 가능성을 제시하는 동시에 이를 맛살라무비 특유의 축제성과 해피엔딩으로 녹여냄으로써 세계적인 흥행을 가져올 수 있었다고 본다.

영어초록

This study aims to apply concepts of ‘culture model’ by Lotman to analyzing storytelling. In order to achieve the research goal, the study regards an Indian film titled <3 Idiots> to be one of these interpretations on culture model in the Indian society and tries to analyze storytelling. The most common feature of culture model offered by Lotman is considered to be the presence of a boundary that divides a culture space into two different parts. That is what corresponds to this argument which sees one’s own ‘culture’ as the one and only one while it excludes what is not included in such category of the former as a ‘non-culture.’ In <3 Idiots>, the stage is Imperial College the most prestigious university in India, and a culture of members of the elite is distinguished from a non-culture that is excluded from the culture of the elite class. Culture model by Lotman which has been described so far can be also a topic of this discussion to compare the model with socially normative characters and individualist characters which are the character types presented by Cognitive Narratologist Hogan. Rancho is a hero of the film and as an individualist character, he enters the culture from the non-culture and then, enjoys the victory in his conflict with the dean the socially normative character. Rancho would not be forced out to the non-culture, nor would he accept authority in the culture, but he builds up a new culture as an alternative. That is what can be explained by Lotman’s culture/anti-culture model. In terms of the new culture which Rancho has created, it is filled with these properties that go only opposite to any of the existing norms. In other words, the culture is going beyond competitions but is pursuing peace the transcendental value. As far as this study understands, <3 Idiots> ended up being a box office hit across the whole world not only as it had fought against success stories about the law of the jungle which was formed by globalization combined with capitalism and introduced a chance of a new alternative culture but also as it had added this special festival property of Masala Movie and a happy ending to itself.
