초록

본 연구는 한국어에서 정보의 출처를 나타내는 어휘 요소와 조사가 결합하는 양상을 분석하고, 이를 통해 조사와 증거성의 관계를 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 증거성(evidentiality)은 화자가 정보를 획득한 방식을 나타내는 언어 범주이다. 본 연구에서는 Willett(1988)의 분류에 기초하되 직접성의 정도에 따라 증거의 유형을 ‘감각을 통한 직접 증거’, ‘내적 과정에 의한 직접 증거’, ‘간접 증거’로 구분하였다.
조사 ‘에’와 ‘로’가 정보 출처를 나타내는 어휘 요소와 결합할 때에는 정보의 유형에 따른 선호가 발생한다. 감각 증거에서는 ‘에’와의 결합이 선호되며 전달 증거에서는 ‘로’와의 결합이 선호된다. 화자의 내적 사고에 정보의 출처를 두는 사고 증거의 경우, 화자가 정보를 입수하는 데에 직접적으로 개입하였는지에 따라 조사 결합 양상이 달라진다. 화자가 직접 판단함으로써 정보를 얻게 되는 경우에는 ‘에’와 주로 결합하지만, 화자의 기억에 의한 정보인 경우에는 정보의 출처가 불분명하여 간접성이 큰 경우에는 ‘로’와 주로 결합한다.
본 연구는 증거성에 따라 조사 ‘에’와 ‘로’의 결합 양상이 달라지는 이유를 이동/변화의 의미와 경계 설정의 특성을 통해 설명하였다. 조사 ‘에’는 변화의 의미가 포함되지 않으며, 경계가 명확히 설정될 수 있는 감각 증거와 화자의 판단이 명확한 사고 증거와 결합하는 경향을 보인다. 반면, ‘로’는 정보의 이동성을 반영하여 전달 증거 및 경계를 명확히 설정하기 어려운 사고 증거와 결합한다. 이를 통해 ‘에’와 ‘로’는 단독으로 증거성을 나타내는 표지로 기능하기는 어렵지만, 화자가 정보의 출처를 인식한 방식을 간접적으로 확인할 수 있는 도구로서의 역할을 수행함을 확인하였다.

영어초록

The objective of this study is twofold: firstly, to analyse the patterns of combination between lexical elements indicating information sources and case markers in Korean; secondly, to explore the relationship between investigation and evidentiality. The ‘evidentiality’ is used to describe a linguistic category that indicates how a speaker acquires information. In accordance with Willett's (1988) classification, this study categorizes evidence into three types based on the degree of directness: sensory evidence, internal evidence, and reported evidence. The combination of case markers ‘ey(neun)’ and ‘ro(neun)’ with lexical elements denoting information sources gives rise to preferences contingent on the type of evidence in question. In the context of sensory evidence, the use of the case marker ‘ey(neun)’ is more prevalent, whereas the case marker ‘ro(neun)’ is more frequently employed in the context of reported evidence. In the case of internal evidence, which is based on the speaker's internal cognition, the choice of case marker varies depending on the extent to which the speaker was involved in acquiring the information. In instances where the information is evaluated directly by the speaker, the 'ey(neun)' case marker is typically employed. However, when the information is derived from the speaker's memory and is less clear, the use of 'ro(neun)' is preferred due to its greater indirectness. This study elucidates the distinctions in the conjunctional patterns of "ey(neun)" and "ro(neun)" in accordance with evidentiality, with a particular emphasis on their denotations pertaining to movement, alteration, and demarcation. The ‘ey(neun)’ is devoid of the concept of change and is typically associated with sensory evidence and internal evidence that pertains to clear judgments made by the speaker. In contrast, "ro(neun)" reflects the mobility of information and is used with reported evidence and internal evidence where boundary-setting is less distinct. While "ey(neun)" and "ro(neun)" may not independently function as evidential markers, the findings confirm that they indirectly reveal the speaker's perception of the information source.
