초록

This paper purports to be a critical survey of current trends in Native American literary studies that (hopefully) provides Korean scholars with a broader perspective. Breaking down the history of the studies into two rough phases, the mid-1980s to mid-2000 and mid-2000 to the present, the paper sketches out how the field has developed since 1981 that marks the beginning of influential criticism by Native scholars themselves. It particularly focuses on how Native American studies have taken some political turns for the three decades with respect to collisions and interactions between two central discourses, nationalism and cosmopolitanism. In doing so, the paper recognizes transnationalism as the most frequently employed idea in influential critical monographs, as well as in the articles of Studies in American Indian Literatures, for the last decades, in order to ultimately illuminate the development of an Indigenous transnational or trans-Indigenous orientation in Native American studies. This is, however, not to dismiss the nationalistic approach of Native scholars as a relapse into “essentialism” or “enthocentrism.” Rather, in the context of Indigenous (decolonial) movements today, the paper views nationalism as a grounding discourse that lasts and operates at a global level, that may offer some valuable insights into the possible link between Native Americas and Korea in terms of, for example, a common experience of colonial oppression.
