In 1973, 297 pieces of artifacts were discovered at a canal construction site, later called as Gyerim-no Tomb no. 14. Among the findings was the jeweled dagger, that is unlike the typical long swords found in Korean tombs, incised with precious stone like almandine and glass, kept in a sheath with flaring end. It is now in the collection of Gyeongju National Museum. The jeweled dagger was found near the waist of the person lying on the left side among the two corpses. There was a long sword next to the left leg of the person lying on the right side. These two persons are thought to have died between 20 and 39 years old, based on the analysis of their teeth. Regarding their social status, the scholars have discussed that the buried would have been the horse riding warriors, or the members of Silla royal family above the rank of Jingol, or a high-ranked foreigner. The location of the tomb is also interesting because it is between the large tumuli occupied by the kings and the smaller tombs of the lower-class population. Nevertheless, the vicinity to the royal tombs, and the luxurious burial goods show that the buried occupied high social status.
The donor images of Kucha’s Buddhist caves show the donors who carried the similar dagger as the one found in Gyerim-no. These portraits were painted in Kizil Caves no. 17, no. 67, no. 69, no. 199, no. 205, Kumtura Caves no. 23, no. GK 17, and a fragment of a wall painting now in the collection of State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg (inv. no. ВД 868). The carriers of the Gyerim-no type dagger were likely kings and their direct successors, mostly marked with halo. This dagger was probably transported via trade routes of Northern Wei. The Silla envoys to Northern Wei possibly obtained this dagger, that was probably later gifted to the nobleman who was buried with it.
