캐릭터 스토리텔링의 사회적 상상력 연구 -펭수 캐릭터를 중심으로 (A Study on the Social Imagination of Character Storytelling - Focusing on ‘Pengsoo’ characters)

초록

본 연구는 현재 폭발적 인기를 누리고 있는 <자이언트 펭TV>의 펭수를 중심으로 캐릭터 스토리텔링의 사회적 상상력을 고찰하고자 한다. 캐릭터 스토리텔링은 근본적으로 비즈니스와 긴밀한 관계에 있으므로 사회·문화 현상들이 중요한 수단이 된다. 또한 인간이 가진 상상력은 사회성을 직시하지 않을 수 없으며 궁극적으로 사회질서에 편입된다. 본고는 캐릭터가 이미지에서 파생하여 사회가 가진 도구와 기능들을 흡수하고 다시 창출한다는데 주목한다. 정보화 사회에서 미디어산업은 문화네트워크를 형성하며 글로벌화 되고 있다. 미디어환경이 사회적 상상력의 바탕이 된 것이다. 펭수 캐릭터는 미디어 환경을 배경으로 기존의 스토리텔링이 가진 이점과 현대의 사회현상들을 흡수했다는 점에서 유의미한 연구 가치를 가진다.
펭수 캐릭터 스토리텔링은 첫째, 인기 캐릭터의 특성인 단순한 디자인과 행동에 따른 의외성을 가지고 있다. 이미지는 캐릭터의 고유성을 확보하고 사회가 지향하는 관념적 이데올로기의 원천이 된다. 둘째, 유튜브를 통하여 대량의 구독자를 확보하면서도 지상파가 가진 이점을 활용하여 다양한 계층의 팬덤 구축을 용이하게 하였다. 셋째, 소비 세력의 교체를 파악한 인플루언서 마케팅으로 스타시스템의 이점과 캐릭터의 이점을 융합한 스토리텔링을 구축하였다. 넷째, 세대 정체성의 확립과 멀티페르소나의 모습을 들 수 있다. 이것은 현재 사회에 통용되는 성 정체성이나 차별을 차이로 이해하려는 사회적 흐름과도 부합된다. 펭수가 가진 세계관과 스토리텔링은 현재 사회에 통용되는 모습이거나 사회가 지향하는 모습들과 흡사하다. 이것은 대중문화의 흐름과 같은 맥락이라고 할 수 있다. 그러나 매스미디어의 객체로서 펭수가 갖는 파편화된 언어활동과 중심적이지 않은 상업성은 한계로 지적된다.
캐릭터 스토리텔링은 그 사회가 가진 환경과 문화의 흐름을 이해하고 새로운 상상력을 발현할 때 비즈니스에도 좋은 영향을 끼친다. 또한 인간의 감성적 내면을 자극하며 사회와 문화 전반으로 확대되어 다각도로 발전하게 된다. 펭수 캐릭터와 같이 시대가 요구하는 다양성을 흡수하며 전 방위로 활동하는 캐릭터 스토리텔링과 캐릭터 산업은 앞으로도 사회적 상상력과 더욱 긴밀한 관계를 유지하며 발전해 나갈 것이다.

영어초록

This study focuses on the social imagination of character storytelling, focusing on Pengsoo of “Giant PengTV”, which is currently enjoying explosive popularity. Character storytelling is fundamentally related to business, so social and cultural phenomena are important tools. Also, the imagination that man has cannot help but face up to sociality and ultimately be incorporated into social order. This paper is notes that characters derive from images and absorb and recreate the tools and functions of society. In an information society, the media industry is becoming globalized by forming a cultural network. The media environment has become the basis for social imagination. Pengsoo's character has significant research value in that it absorbs the benefits of traditional storytelling and modern social phenomena against the backdrop of the media environment.
Pengsoo character storytelling, first of all, has a simple design and behavior that is characteristic of a popular character, unexpectedness. Images secure the character's uniqueness and become the source of the ideological ideology that society aims for. Second, the company secured large numbers of subscribers through YouTube, while utilizing the advantages of terrestrial broadcasters to facilitate the establishment of fandom at various levels. Third, storytelling was built by combining the benefits of star system with the benefits of character through influencer marketing that grasped the replacement of consumption forces. Finally, we can cite the establishment of generational identity and the appearance of multipersona. This is in line with the social trend of trying to understand gender identity or discrimination that is now accepted in society as a difference. Pengsoo's worldview and storytelling are similar to those used in society today or what society is aiming for. This is in the same vein as the flow of popular culture. However, Pengsoo's fragmented language activity as an object of mass media and his non-central commerciality are pointed out as limitations.
Character storytelling also has a good influence on business when understanding the environment and cultural trends of the society and expressing new imagination. It also stimulates the emotional inner side of human beings and expands throughout society and culture to develop in various ways. The character storytelling and character industry, which absorb the diversity required by the times like Pengsoo characters, will continue to develop and maintain a closer relationship with social imagination.
