목은 이색의 ‘물’에 관한 상상력과 표상화 양상 (The Aspects of Mogeun(牧隱) Lee Saek(李穡)’s Imagination on ‘Water’ and its Representation)

초록

본고는 牧隱 李穡(1328-1396)의 시문에 나타난 물의 상상력과 그 표상화 양상을 고찰하여 고려후기 지적 전통과 인문학적 통찰을 새롭게 조명함을 목적으로 한다.
먼저 예비 검토로서 물 체험과 물 인식을 살펴보았다. 이색이 유년을 보낸 충남 한산은 근원적인 물 체험 공간이다. 그에게 고향 한산은 물로 기억되는 안락하고 충족된 공간, 어머니의 품이다. 청년기에 오갔던 고려와 대륙의 길은 물 체험과 상상력을 확장해 주는 공간으로 외적 도전과 내적 성찰의 양면 가치가 교차한다. 한편 그는 산문작품에서 물의 성질과 보편적 특성을 논파하고, 시에서는 물을 가지고 성리학의 핵심 테제인 본성 문제를 자주 읊었다.
다음으로 이색의 시에 나타난 물의 상상력과 표상화 양상을 강․비․우물 셋으로 나누어 고찰했다. 첫 번째는 흐르는 물-강이다. 그는 물의 유동성과 방향성에 주목해 물로써 인간의 본성을 빈번히 읊었다. 특히 그는 물의 흐르다․이어주다․돌아가다라는 특성을 공간 상상력과 시간 상상력으로 구성해 물 상상력의 다양한 가능성을 보여 주었다. 두 번째는 내리는 물-비이다. 비는 일상이자 시의 주요 소재이다. 비는 다양하고 다면적인 성격을 구유하면서 화음을 이룬다. 그의 상상력은 한편으론 귀향(귀거래)의 꿈으로 이끌려가고, 한편으론 내면 성찰과 하늘 이치 탐색으로 이어지며, 또 민생과 사회․국가에 대한 관심으로 확장되기도 한다. 세 번째는 비추는 물-우물이다. 앞의 둘과 달리 이 물은 움직임을 멈춘 물이다. 우물 역시 생활의 일부이면서 정화와 성찰의 표상으로서 중요한 의미를 갖는다. 우물 안에서 자아는 우주와 대면한다. 우물은 동이의 물이나 잔잔한 강물로서 변용되기도 한다.
이색은 고려후기 문학사와 지성사의 정점에 있는 인물이다. 그에게 물은 체험과 철학․문학에서 근원적인 물질 상상력이다. 철학에서는 성리학의 본성론․수양론의 핵심을 이루고, 문학에서는 물의 詩學이라는 가능성까지 생각해 보게 한다. 본고의 논의는 고려후기 인물들의 문학과 지성을 연구하는 데 한 디딤돌이 될 것이라 기대한다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to shed new light on the intellectual tradition and humanistic insights in the late Goryeo period by examining the aspects of Mogeun Lee Saek’s imagination on ‘water’ and its representation in his literary works.
First, the experience and perception of water were examined for a preliminary review. Hansan, Chungcheongnam-do Province, where he spent his childhood, is a fundamental space to experience water. For him, the hometown is a comfortable and fulfilled space, which is remembered as water, and the mother’s arms. The road between Goryeo Kingdom and the continent where he travelled in his youth is a space that expands the experience of water and imagination. That is a place where the dual values of external challenge and introspection meet each other. Meanwhile, he explained the nature and universal character of water in proses, and, in poetry, frequently explained the matter of nature, which is the core thesis of Neo-Confucianism, using water as a material.
The aspects of his imagination on water and its representation in the poems were divided into three categories such as river, rain, and well to be examined. The first is flowing water - a river. He frequently explained human nature using water as a material, based on the liquidity and directionality of water. It is very impressive the way the imagination on water spreads to the imagination on space and the imagination on time, based on the characteristic of ‘flow’ in particular. The second is falling water - the rain. The rain creates a harmony with diverse and multifaceted characteristics. The rain plays an important part in everyday life and social companionship, which awakens the dream of returning home (or homecoming). Meanwhile, it leads to introspection and the search for the order of nature, and awakens an interest in people’s lives, society and country. The third is reflecting water – a well. Unlike the above two, this water is a water that has stopped moving. A well also has an important meaning as a part of life and the representation of purification and reflection. The self confronts the universe in a well. A well is sometimes transformed into the water in a bucket or the water in a calm river.
Lee Saek is a man at the top of the literary and intellectual history of the late Goryeo period. For him, water refers to the fundamental material imagination in experience, philosophy, and literature. In philosophy, it forms the core of the theory of nature and theory of self-discipline of Neo-Confucianism. In literature, it also evokes the likelihood of the poetics of water. The discussion in this study is expected to be a steppingstone in studying the literature and intelligence of people in the late Goryeo period.
