    초록

    Traditional Korean music plays a critical role in middle school music education. However, traditional music education in schools, particularly Korean folk music, is facing some challenges.
    One reason is a lack of overall comprehension of traditional music among young music teachers. Most new music teachers at middle school have learned European classic music before they actually had an opportunity to learn Traditional Korean music systematically. Therefore, expression of rhythm or lyrics of traditional music is likely to be inaccurate.
    Secondly, over-focusing on the palace music is the other reason. Since folk music has been passed down to the next generation orally, while our ancestors were working outside, practical song-singing should be one of the key objectives in traditional music education.
    According to a survey of music teachers, however, the expression of rhythm of traditional folk music is still the key challenge in middle school music education.
    The objective of this research is to investigate the history of traditional music as well as to develop a new teaching strategy to improve student comprehension and appreciation of Korean folk music using new musical notations.
    First, the types, functions and the features of Korean folk music were investigated. In addition, a survey using a new musical notations program for the development of expression of Korean folk music was performed.
    Web-based folk music from 2nd grade middle school music curriculum was selected for this research. In addition, new musical notations were used to evaluate student’s progress in the class.
    For the statistical comparison, 30 students were selected from the author’s school as well as another 30 students from a similar middle school nearby. Two groups were also pre-screened to determine their understanding of folk music. Then, group A students were taught using the new system of musical notations with web-based folk music, whereas control group students were taught using regular five-line musical notations.
    After finishing the evaluation, two groups were surveyed in terms of awareness of music and several parameters for the progress evaluation. In addition, the expression of the rhythm of Korean tradition folk music was also evaluated.
    As a result, the new musical notation approach with web-based music listening was much better than the regular five-line musical notation in expressing the original rhythm of Korean folk music. Also, students had more confidence in the original rhythm of the music and they participated more proactively.
    Second, a new musical notation with visual effects allowed students to distinguish several local rhythms which are unique to certain areas. Also, students had more interest in this kind of new musical notation.
    Third, the students exposed to this new music education system had a more positive attitude towards learning Korean traditional folk music than before, and their perspective on traditional music has been also improved greatly.
    In conclusion, this web-based new musical notation system was considered to be a great tool in improving music education in Korean traditional folk music.
