오정희 소설에 나타난 집과 건축적 상상력 (The House and Architectural Imagination in Oh Jung-hee’s Novels)

초록

이 글에서는 오정희가 대부분의 작품들에서 집을 중심적인 배경으로, 혹은 거의 유일한 배경으로 삼으며, 집의 특정한 형태와 건축적 요소를 반복적으로 제시한다는 점에 주목했다. 집을 구체화하는 작업이 오정희의 작법이자 문학적 상상력의 한 갈래라고 보아, 오정희 소설을 관류하는 건축적 상상력을 탐색하는 것을 목표로 삼았다. 이 글에서 말하는 건축적 상상력이란 건축(물)에 대한, 건축(물)을 통한 작가의 상상력을 의미한다. 이를 살펴봄으로써, 오정희가 어떻게 건축(물)에 기반하여 이야기를 만드는지 알아보고자 했다. 오정희 소설에서 집의 형태는 크게 단독주택과 아파트로 나뉜다. 「동경」, 「미명」, 「어둠의 집」에서 단독주택은 담장과 대문을 갖춘 형태로 그려진다. 각 소설에서 중요한 사건이 발생하는 위치가 바로 담장과 대문이다. 거주자인 주인공들은 담장이나 대문을 통해 외부인이 근접해 있음을 느끼고, 특히 대문을 통해서는 누군가가 집으로 침입하는 사건이 일어나기도 한다. 오정희가 상상하는 단독주택은 허술한 담장과 대문으로 인해 침입에 취약한 집이다. 여기에는 거주자들의 ‘침입자’에 대한 의식이 함축되어 있다. 이는 삶이 가진 취약함과 그로 인해 느끼게 되는 불안함, 무력함을 표현하는 것으로 이해할 수 있다. 또한 오정희의 상상력은 거주자를 그와 반대되는 침입자로도 그려냄으로써 인물의 내면과 이야기의 폭을 넓힌다. 「옛우물」, 「적요」, 「불의 강」에서 주인공들이 사는 집은 모두 아파트 꼭대기 층에 위치하고 이 사실이 각 소설에서 강조된다. 오정희가 주목하는 건축적 요소는 아파트 꼭대기 층까지 이어지는 층계로, 여기에서 그의 건축적 상상력이 극대화된다. 층계는 거주자가 외부로부터 거리를 확보하고 타인과 분리됨으로써 집을 자신만의 공간으로서 점유할 수 있게 하는 건축적 요소이다. 각 소설에서 주인공이 소유할 수 있는 아파트 꼭대기 층의 집은 내밀한 공간으로 상상된다. 주인공들이 내밀한 집에 머물러 있고 ‘요나 이야기’를 연상시키는 이미지가 나타난다는 점에서 오정희 소설에서 논의된 바 있는 ‘요나 콤플렉스’가 나타난다고 볼 수도 있겠으나, 아파트 꼭대기 층 집의 건축적 특징에 기반하여 표현된 것은 ‘변형된 요나 콤플렉스’에 가깝다. 내밀하고 안락한 자기만의 세계에 칩거하려는 욕망이 아닌 다른 욕망이 나타난다는 것이다. 「옛우물」에서 주인공은 자신이 깃들었던 안락한 세계를 상실했을 때 이를 되찾고자 하는 욕망이 아니라, ‘안’에서 ‘바깥’으로 향해 다른 세계와 만나고 다른 존재가 되려는 욕망을 품는다. 반면 「적요」와 「불의 강」에서 주인공들은 타인을 자신이 소유한 내밀한 공간 ‘안’으로 사로잡아 자신과 함께 있도록 가둬두고 싶은 욕망을 느낀다. 이러한 인물들의 욕망은 아파트 꼭대기 층 집과 그 건축적 요소들을 통해 전개된 것이다. 이처럼 오정희는 건축적 상상력으로 ‘내밀한 공간’의 폭을 확대하고 요나 콤플렉스를 변형하여 인물의 내면을 그려냈다.

This article focuses on that Oh Jung-hee uses the house as the central or almost the only background and repeatedly presents the specific forms and architectural elements of the house in many novels. This article aims to explore the architectural imagination that runs through Oh Jung- hee’s novels, considering the task of concretizing a house as her fictional techniques and one of the branches of her literary imagination. In this article, the author’s architectural imagination refers to the imagination about architecture and through architecture. By examining this, this article aims to find out how Oh Jung-hee creates stories based on architecture. In Oh Jung-hee’s novels, there are two main types of houses: detached houses and apartments. In “The Copper Mirror”, “The Gray of the Morning” and “The Dark House”, the detached house is depicted with a fence and gate. In each novel, the fence and gate are where the important events occur. The protagonists, who are residents, feel the proximity of outsiders through the fence or gate, and especially through the gate, someone breaks into the house. The detached house that that Oh Jung-hee imagines is vulnerable to intrusion due to the weak fence and gate. The residents’ consciousness of the ‘intruder’ is in here. This can be understood as an expression of the vulnerability of life and the anxiety and helplessness it creates. In addition, Oh Jung-hee’s imagination also depicts the resident as the intruder, which broadens the inner world of the characters and the scope of the story. In “The Old Well”, “Quietness” and “The River of Fire”, the houses where the main characters live are all located on the top floors of the apartments, and this fact is emphasized in each novel. The architectural element that draws Oh Jung-hee’s attention is the stairs that leads to the top floor of the apartment, where her architectural imagination is at its best. The stairs are an architectural element that allows the residents to occupy the house as their own space by creating distance from the outside world and separating them from others. In each novel, the house in the top floor of the apartment that the protagonists can own is imagined as an intimate space. It could be said that the ‘Jonah complex’ discussed in Oh Jung-hee’s novels is present in that the protagonists stay in an intimate house and the images reminiscent of the ‘Jonah story’ appear, but what is expressed through the architectural features of the house on the top floor of the apartment is more of a ‘modified Jonah complex’. A desire other than the desire to stick to one’s own intimate, comfortable world emerges. In “The Old Well”, When the protagonist loses her comfort world, her desire is not to regain it, but to move from the ‘inside’ to the ‘outside’, to encounter other worlds and become someone else. On the other hand, in “Quietness” and “The River of Fire” the protagonists feel the desire to capture others into their own intimate space and lock them in there to stay together with them. The desires of these characters are developed through the house on the top floor of the apartment and its architectural elements. With this architectural imagination, Oh Jung-hee enlarges the scope of the ‘intimate space’ and depicts the inner worlds of the characters, transforming the Jonah complex.
