초록

이 글은 1935년 카프(KAPF) 해산 이후 조직의 재건이 불가능해져버린 상황에서 역사 발전의 ‘추진력’을 예술적으로 사유하고자 했던 김남천의 문제의식을 포착하고, 이를 통해 마르크시스트이자 모더니스트였던 김남천의 일면을 새롭게 재구해보고자 하였다. 카프 해산 이후 김남천의 문제의식은 소시민 지식인으로서의 본인을 상형하는 길과 김남천에 소년이라는 한 획을 더하는 길로 갈라진다. 본고에서는 이 상형(象形)과 가획(加劃)의 원리에 포함되지 않는 이채로운 소설인 「장날」(『문장』, 1939.6)과 「이리」(『조광』, 1939.6)를 주된 분석 대상으로 삼아 김남천의 비평만으로는 설명되지 않는 김남천 소설의 미학적 원리를 밝혀보고자 하였다.
「장날」과 「이리」는 영화의 몽타주 기법을 활용한 아쿠타가와 류노스케의 「덤불 속」과 뒤비비에의 <페페 르 모코>를 차용하고 있다는 점에서 김남천이 소설과 영화의 장르 교섭 양상에 대해 관심을 기울이고 있었다는 사실을 방증한다. 본고에서는 이 두 편의 소설에 조선의 현실을 어떻게 서사적으로 구현할 것인가라는 김남천의 고민이 담겨 있다고 판단하고 두 작품을 보다 세밀하게 분석하고자 하였다.
혁명이 불가능해진 시점에서 김남천은 혁명을 예술적으로 사유하고자 하였고, 이때 일본 소설과 프랑스 영화는 코민테른의 테제와는 또 다른 의미의 국제성의 차원이었다. 그러나 중요한 것은 김남천이 국제성의 차원을 염두에 두면서도 동시에 1930년대 후반 식민지 조선의 현실을 통감(痛感)하고 있었다는 점이다. 이 때문에 김남천은 혁명의 파토스를 유도하여 혁명 정신을 드러내는 소비에트식의 몽타주 이론과 거리를 두고 조선의 현실을 새롭게 인식할 수 있도록 유도하는 몽타주 기법을 구사하였다.
김남천의 「장날」이 ‘몽타주 기법’을 적용하여 혁명을 영화적으로 사색하는 힘을 드러내고 있는 한편으로, 「이리」는 소설가 ‘나’와 박군이 소설을 창작해나가는 과정을 보여줌으로써 혁명을 소설적으로 사색하는 힘을 형상화한다. 이때 소설적으로 사색하는 힘이란 김남천이 여러 비평에서 강조하였던 ‘구상력(構想力)’을 가리킨다. ‘구상력’이란 작가의 이상과 인식 수준, 그리고 현실을 파악하고 재구성하는 능력을 일컫는다. 즉 김남천은 「장날」에서는 몽타주를, 「이리」에서는 구상력을 형상화한 것이다. 「이리」에서 ‘나’와 박군이 소설 속 주인공에게 요구하는 강렬한 성격이란 혁명의 동인으로서의 ‘파괴의 정념’을 의미한다. 이는 김남천이 카프 해산 이후 조직 외부에서 혁명의 계기를 찾고 있었다는 점을 암시하며, 특히 개인의 내면에서 발생하는 혁명의 동력에 그의 관심이 머물러 있었음을 보여준다.
따라서 「장날」과 「이리」는 1930년대 후반 김남천 소설의 두 가지 흐름에서 벗어나는 이채(異彩)로운 소설들이 아니라 실은 김남천이라는 기본자에서 갈라져 나온 이체(異體)였던 것이다.

영어초록

This paper shows the critical mind of Kim Namcheon, who tried to artistically reason the ‘impellent force’ of the historical development while the reconstruction of the organization became impossible after the dissolution of KAPF in 1935. Through this process this paper will reconstruct an aspect of Kim Namcheon as a Marxist and Modernist. After the dissolution of KAPF, Kim Namcheon’s critical mind diverged into copying himself as a petit bourgeois intellectual and meanwhile adding a juvenile stroke to Kim Namcheon himself. This paper will reveal the aesthetic principle of Kim Namcheon’s novels which are inexplicable with only his critics by mainly analyzing “Market Day” (Munjang, 1939.6) and “Wolf” (Jogwang, 1939.6) which are conspicuous novels, not included in the principle of copy and addition of stroke.
The novels “Market Day” and “Wolf” prove that Kim Namcheon was interested in the negotiation modality of genre between novel and movie in that they borrow from Akutagawa Ryunosuke’s “Inside of the Bush” and Duvivier’s “Pepe Ie Moko,” using the montage technique of movies. This paper has decided that “Market Day” and “Wolf” contain the concerns of Kim Namcheon on how to realize the reality of Chosun descriptively, and tried to analyze those two novels more specifically.
At the time when revolution became impossible, Kim Namcheon tried to reason revolution artistically, and at this time Japanese novel and French movie were the dimension of internationality in a different sense from Comintern’s thesis. However what was important was that Kim Namcheon kept the dimension of internationality in mind, and also at the same time he deeply felt the reality of Chosun in the late 1930s as a colony. Because of this, Kim Namcheon detached from the Soviet style of montage technique which reveals the revolution spirit by inducing the pathos of revolution, and made use of montage technique which had the effect of inducing so that the reality of Chosun could be understood newly.
Kim Namcheon’s “Market Day” has the power of reasoning revolution cinematically by using this ‘montage technique’ while “Wolf” embodies the power of reasoning revolution novelistically by portraying the process of writing a novel of the writer ‘I’ and Mr. Park. The power of reasoning revolution novelistically mentioned here means the ‘design power’ which Kim Namcheon emphasized in several critics. ‘Design power’ is the ideal, cognition level, and the ability to understand and reconstitute reality of the writer. In short, Kim Namcheon embodied montage in “Market Day” and design power in “Wolf.” The intense personality which ‘I’ and Mr. Park requires to the protagonist in “Wolf” is the ‘pathos of destruction’ as a motivation of revolution. This suggests that Kim Namcheon was finding the revelation of revolution from outside the organization after the dissolution of KAPF, and especially shows that he was interested in the motivation of revolution occurring in an individual’s inner side.
Therefore, “Market Day” and “Wolf” are not conspicuous novels which are apart from the two flows of Kim Namcheon’s late 1930s novels but in fact are different alphabetic forms budding from the main branch of Kim Namcheon.
