초록

Augustine is the first to make a clear division between sense-image and memory-image. Augustine conjoins will with memory. So the will in its freedom can incite internal vision to transform memories, to add and subtract and recombine them. Imagination is a power for seeing the absent, be it remembered or invented.
For Avicenna and Averroes, imagination is the power that enables us to imagine things we have not perceived, and indeed may not even exist in the world. Thomas insist that imagination is the power to conserve and reproduce the data of perceptual experience. So by taking the images of gold and mountains, we can visualize a golden mountain because imagination puts the two images together.
In medieval philosophy, we could consider imagination as a creative ability. We may say that we could find the continuity, from ancient philosophy to renaissance philosophy, in the medieval philosophy
