만 5세 읽기능력, 어휘력 및 개인·환경 변인에 따른초등학교 3학년 읽기이해능력과 어휘력 (The effects of 5 year-old children’s language ability, vocabularyand personal environment valuables on their readingcomprehension and vocabulary in third grade)

초록

본 연구는 종단연구로서 만 5세 시기 유아의 읽기능력, 어휘력에 따라, 그리고 유아기의 성, 소득수준, 부모 학력과 같은 개인적 변인과 사교육 경험 유무에 따라 초등학교 3학년 시기의 읽기이해능력, 어휘력에 차이가 있는지를 알아보고자 하였다.
본 연구의 1차 연구는 2008년 10월부터 2009년 2월까지 이루어졌으며 서울 및 수도권에 위치한 유치원과 어린이집 재원 만 5세 유아 578명의 읽기능력과 어휘(PPVT-R)능력을 측정하였다. 본 연구는 초등학교 1학년 시기에 이루어진 2차 연구 이후 이루어진 3차 연구로서 연구대상 아동이 초등학교 3학년이 된 후 187명을 대상으로 읽기이해능력검사와 어휘검사를 실시하였다.
연구 결과 첫째, 만 5세 시기 읽기능력과 어휘력이 높은 집단이 초등학교 3학년 시기의 읽기이해능력과 어휘력에서 유의하게 높은 점수를 나타냈다. 둘째, 개인적 변인에 따른 차이를 알아본 결과 여아가 읽기이해능력에서 남아보다 유의하게 높았으며, 소득수준이 높은 집단이 읽기이해능력과 어휘력에서 모두 유의하게 높았고, 아버지 학력과 어머니 학력이 높은 집단이 읽기이해능력과 어휘력에서 모두 유의하게 높은 점수를 나타냈다. 셋째, 유아기 사교육 경험이 없는 집단이 읽기이해능력과 어휘력에서 모두 유의하게 높은 점수를 받았다.
본 연구 결과 만 5세 시기의 읽기능력과 어휘력이 이후 초등학교 3학년 시기의 읽기이해능력과 어휘력에 중요한 요인이지만 유아기 문해 관련 사교육 경험에 따라서 차이가 나타나지 않은 것으로 보아 만 5세 시기의 읽기능력과 어휘력을 길러주기 위해서 보다 경험적이고 흥미로운 문해환경 조성과 부모와 교사의 적극적인 역할이 요청됨을 시사한다.

영어초록

This longitudinal study was undertaken to discover whether reading comprehension ability and vocabulary ability at the third grade level in primary school are dependent on children‘s reading ability and vocabulary ability at age five. The study also examines whether differences in reading comprehension ability and vocabulary ability at the third grade can be attributed not only to children‘s personal and environmental variables such as gender, income level and parents‘education levels but also to whether or not the children had some early childhood experience in private education. The first phase of the study was conducted from October 2008 to February 2009, and it measured the reading and vocabulary abilities(PPVT-R) of 578 five-year old preschoolers at kindergartens and child care centers located in the Seoul Metropolitan area. Then there was a follow-up to the first phase when the subject children entered the first grade in primary school. The present study is the second phase in which the reading comprehension and vocabulary abilities of 187 of these children were tested after they entered the third grade. The results of this study are 1), that the group with high reading ability and vocabulary ability at age five attained significantly higher scores in reading comprehension and vocabulary abilities in the third grade than did the groups with lower scores in these areas at age five. 2), an examination of differences due to environmental variables showed that the girls exhibited significantly higher reading comprehension ability than the boys, that the high-income group had significantly higher scores in both reading comprehension ability and vocabulary ability, and that the group with fathers and mothers who had higher education level also gained significantly higher scores in both reading comprehension ability and vocabulary ability. 3), the group with no private education experience during early childhood received significantly higher scores in both reading comprehension ability and vocabulary ability.
