최인훈 소설의 정치적 상상력 (‘The political’ imagination in Choi In-hoon's novels.)

초록

이 논문은 최인훈의 소설 전반에서 드러나는 정치적 상상력의 의미를 살펴보기 위한 글이다. 먼저 최인훈의 초기 소설을 통해서 정치적 사건으로서의 혁명의 의미를 살펴봄으로써 제도적 정치나 현실 정치의 문제가 아니라 보다 근본적인 '정치적인 것'의 개념에 접근할 수 있었다. 『라울전』에서 확인할 수 있는 바, 혁명적인 사건은 타자의 영역과 충돌하는 지점에서 구체화된다. 그것은 종래의 가치와 위계화된 질서를 뒤흔드는 혼돈의 영역을 가시화한다. 요컨대 '정치적인 것'은 동일화나 구조화가 아니라 이질적인 감각을 환기하는 불일치의 작용이다. 예술이 '정치적인 것'의 영역과 교차하는 지점은 은폐되었던 감각을 일깨우는 혼란과 혼돈을 부른다. 최인훈은 예술의 정치적인 개입의 차원을 예술의 미학성의 문제와 함께 고민해 온 작가이다. 그 문제는 최인훈의 소설이 드러난 <예술론>에서 반복적으로 강조되어 온 점이다. 최인훈에게 예술은 단순히 내적, 외적 갈등을 해결해 주는 돌파구도 아니고 불일치의 지점들을 미적으로 승화(소거)하기 위한 도구도 아니다. 예술가는 타자와의 접촉을 통해 이질성을 감각적으로 경험하고, 일상 속의 '불화'를 극대화하여, 비가시적인 방식으로 은폐된 근본적인 '적대'를 환기하는 역할을 한다. 최인훈의 소설 속에서 예술가는 '난민' 표상을 통해 담론적 차원이 아니라 존재론적 차원의 정치적인 의미를 갖는다. 예술가의 상상력과 '정치적인 것'의 접점은 순수한 예술과 정치적인 실천을 분리하는 것이 아니라, 예술과 정치를 함께 사유할 수 있는 새로운 지평을 제공한다.

영어초록

This paper researches the meaning of ‘the political’ from the perspective of narrative structures in Choi In-hoon's novels. As a writer,Choi constantly raised questions on Korean spiritual history covering the Japanese colonial period through the period after Korean liberation. The most haunting theme of his novels is that human beings should be free from every spiritual subordination or self-effacement and establish subjectivity through self awareness. And, as every subject existing through self reflective awareness is closely related to the public by way of memories, the self establishment of the subject is made not in private but in the public realm. This is also the way, in order to overcome political oppression. Based on this premise, this paper analyzes the value of the freedom of the individual and inevitable connection between the subject's effort at self establishment and the other(s), and the structure of this process in Choi's novels.
In this respect, meaning of ‘the political’ can be classified into three categories by the modes of relationship between the subject and the structural principle of discourse. ‘The political’ in Choi's novels are delivered, the fundamental reason of the failure of the 4 19 Revolution not in the particular of modern Korea but in the modernity situated the world history. And The ethics which make the subject responsible even for the unexpected result of his activity can be reached only after the subject has obtained its autonomy. For example the hero's death in 『광장』 clarifies the possibility that the relation with others releases the subject from being a narcissistic subject and gives the chance to be reborn as an ethical subject. The action has ‘the political’ meaning.
In the process of self establishment, ‘destiny’ should be discriminated from fatalism. Destiny is not opposed to ’liberty,‘ or rather liberty can be found only by destiny. The subject can obtain meaning through relation with other(s) by the means of awareness, wordplay, and ethical autonomy.
The force of the liberty comes from the relation of the subject and the other(s), not the political ideology.
