마가렛 말러의 “심리적 탄생”에 대한 목회상담적 함의 (Implications of Margaret Mahler’s theory, the Psychological Birth for Pastoral Counseling)

초록

본 연구의 목적은 마가렛 말러의 대상관계 이론의 핵심인 심리적 탄생에 대한 그 의미를 탐색하며 목회상담적 의미와 적용을 논의하는 것이다. 대상관계 이론은 정신분석이론에서 출발하였지만 정신분석이론에서의 대상의 목적과 역할이 다르기에 그 차이점을 살펴보며 말러의 대상관계 이론과의 유사점과 차이점을 탐색하였다. 말러는 유아기 시기의 심리적 발달 단계에 대한 장기 관찰연구를 통하여 그 단계들에 대한 사실적 묘사와 의미를 제시하였다. 정신분석 이론에서는 심리적 발달이 오디푸스 시기에 거의 이루어진다고 보았지만 말러는 그 이전의 유아의 초기 대상관계 경험을 통해서 완성되어진다고 보았다. 정상적 자폐 단계, 공생 단계, 연습기, 재접근기, 대상항상성 단계를 거치면서 유아는 심리적 발달을 경험하는데 그 심리적 분리-개별화 과정이 심리적 탄생이라고 묘사 하였다. 심리적 탄생은 유아에게 가장 중요한 대상과의 관계를 통하여 일어난다. 유아의 심리적 탄생에서 가장 중요한 역할 인물은 어머니인데 말러는 유아의 심리적 탄생을 가장 촉진하는 어머니로서 최적의 어머니(optimal mother)를 강조한다. 최적의 어머니는 단순히 유아의 욕구만을 충족시켜주는 대상이 아니라 유아가 대상과의 융합에만 머무르는 것이 아니라 독립적이고 자율적인 존재로 성장하도록 역할을 감당한다. 본 연구는 말러가 강조한 최적의 어머니의 역할에 대해 정신분석이론 및 이전의 대상관계 이론들과 비교 및 평가를 하였다. 또한 대상관계를 통한 자기 인식과 영적 대상인 하나님에 대한 이미지와 표상 형성에 대해서도 살펴보았으며 신학적 관점으로도 긍정적인 대상항상성 및 하나님 표상과의 연결성을 고찰하였다. 본 연구는 말러의 대상관계 이론에 근거한 목회 상담적 치료적 방안과 목회상담가의 역할을 논의 하였으며 후속 연구에 대한 기초를 제공하였다는 점에서 의미가 있다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to explore the meaning of the psychological birth, which is the main idea of Margaret Mahler’s object relations theory and to discuss the implications of the psychological birth from a pastoral counseling perspective. Object relations theory stemmed from psychoanalytic theory; however, there are different interpretations on the purpose and role of the object between the object relations theory and the psychoanalytic theory. Therefore, this study examined the similarities and differences between Mahler’s theory and the psychodynamic theories. Mahler provided specific descriptions and the meaning of psychological development stages in early childhood. While the psychoanalytic theory argues that psychological development is almost completed in the Oedipus period, Mahler emphasizes the importance of the early object relationship experiences of an infant. Mahler observed that Infants go through the normal autistic phase, symbiotic phase, practicing phase, rapproachement phase, and object constancy phase in terms of psychological development and considered the separation-individuation process psychological birth. As mother plays an important role in the psychological birth, Mahler notes that the optimal mother can promote the psychological birth of the human infant most. The optimal mother meets desires of the infant and plays a role in developing independence and individuation of the infant as well. This study evaluated the optimal mother’s role according to Mahler’s theory, comparing with the psychoanalytic theory and other object relations theories. Also, it investigated the formation process of self-awakening and images and representations of God related to object relationships. Also, it examined the relationship between the formation of the positive object constancy and the representation of God from a theological perspective. This study is significant in that it suggested some implications for pastoral counseling and roles for pastoral counselors and provided the foundation for future studies in relation to Mahler’s theory.
